Chapter 12

The gunshot shattered the incubator's side panel.

I screamed and threw myself over Evelyn.

Glass fell across my shoulders.

Dr. Hawthorne dropped to the floor.

Ethan fired back.

Margaret ran toward the hallway.

Reeve seized her by the arm and used her as a shield.

Police burst through the rear entrance.

"Drop your weapons!"

The nursery exploded into noise.

Ethan overturned a metal table and fired toward the doorway.

Detective Ortiz returned fire from cover.

My father entered behind her.

His eyes found me immediately.

"Evelyn!"

"She's alive!"

The portable monitor beeped wildly.

I covered my daughter with the yellow blanket, protecting her from flying glass.

Dr. Hawthorne crawled toward the exit.

Margaret kicked him in the face.

"You coward!"

Reeve pulled her backward.

"You created this mess."

"I created the money."

"And now you're a liability."

He pressed the gun beneath her jaw.

Margaret froze.

For the first time, she understood what every woman in her files had felt.

Powerless.

Ethan moved toward me.

"Give me the baby."

I stared at him.

"Never."

"Claire, don't make me hurt you."

"You already did."

He reached across the broken incubator.

My father tackled him.

The gun slid beneath a cabinet.

Ethan struck my father's injured hand.

My father grunted but did not release him.

They crashed against the wall.

Ethan was younger.

Faster.

Desperate.

My father was controlled.

Every movement had purpose.

He pinned Ethan's arm behind his back.

Ethan twisted and grabbed a shard of glass.

He drove it toward my father's throat.

I shouted.

Detective Ortiz fired once.

The bullet struck Ethan's shoulder.

He fell.

My father kicked the glass away.

Officers rushed forward and cuffed him.

Ethan screamed as blood spread across his shirt.

"You shot an officer!"

Detective Ortiz stood above him.

"I shot a kidnapper reaching for a weapon."

Reeve dragged Margaret into the hallway.

He fired at a ceiling light, plunging half the clinic into darkness.

Officers pursued him.

Margaret screamed for help.

Dr. Hawthorne tried to stand.

I saw him reaching into his medical bag.

A syringe.

Again.

He looked toward Evelyn.

I grabbed a broken metal rail and struck his wrist.

The syringe fell.

He stared at me in disbelief.

"You could have killed her."

"You assaulted a physician."

I struck him again.

This time across the knee.

He collapsed.

"No," I said. "I stopped one."

An officer restrained him.

The neonatal emergency team entered.

They lifted Evelyn from the damaged incubator.

I tried to follow.

My body finally failed.

Blood ran down my leg.

Dr. Patel caught me before I hit the floor.

"You reopened the incision."

"My baby."

"They have her."

"Don't let Hawthorne touch her."

"He never will."

I was placed on another stretcher.

As they carried me outside, I saw Ethan lying beneath police guard.

Our eyes met.

There was no apology in his face.

No love.

Only hatred that I had survived.

"You ruined everything," he said.

I looked at the officers surrounding him.

"No, Ethan. I recorded it."

His face changed.

The concealed microphone had captured every word.

His admission that our marriage was an assignment.

His claim that I belonged to him.

The arguments between Reeve, Margaret, and Hawthorne.

The gunfire.

All of it.

Police vehicles surrounded the clinic.

Margaret sat in an ambulance, shaking beneath a blanket.

She had escaped Reeve when an officer shot him in the leg.

Reeve was alive and under arrest.

Dr. Hawthorne was handcuffed.

Ethan was handcuffed.

For the first time, all four of them were contained.

My father climbed into the ambulance with me.

"Did we get her back?" I whispered.

He looked toward the neonatal vehicle carrying Evelyn.

"Yes."

"Is she safe?"

"She is with the medical team."

"That wasn't my question."

He understood.

None of us were safe yet.

Not while their network existed.

Not while compromised officers remained unidentified.

Not while hundreds of victims were still trapped beneath false diagnoses.

My father took my hand.

"We finish this properly."

At the hospital, surgeons repaired my incision.

Evelyn was placed in a secure neonatal room.

Dr. Patel confirmed she had not been harmed during the kidnapping.

She had missed oxygen support briefly but recovered.

I was allowed to hold her for the first time.

Her body fit against my chest like a fragile promise.

My father stood beside us.

Rachel watched through the glass.

Detective Ortiz entered quietly.

"They're all in federal custody."

I kissed Evelyn's head.

"Then why do you look worried?"

Ortiz placed a document on the table.

It was a transfer order for Ethan.

Signed that morning.

Before his arrest.

The order instructed officers to move him to a military medical facility under the authority of Internal Affairs.

The approving official was not Daniel Reeve.

It was someone higher.

May you like

Major General William Harrow.

My father's commanding officer.
