Chapter 22

The word frightened me more than a direct threat.

MINE.

Ethan did not see Evelyn as a child.

He saw her as property taken from him.

Detective Ortiz increased security.

The neonatal center changed every staff credential.

Windows were covered.

Deliveries stopped.

My father slept in a chair outside our room.

I barely slept at all.

Ethan contacted Rachel next.

He sent a photograph of Caleb's grave.

The soil had been restored.

Fresh flowers stood beside the stone.

The message read:

I'M SORRY ABOUT HIM.

Rachel stared at it without expression.

Then she threw the phone across the room.

"He doesn't get to be sorry."

Detective Ortiz recovered the device.

"Did Ethan ever visit the grave?"

"Never."

"Does the flower mean anything?"

White lilies.

Rachel nodded slowly.

"Margaret carried them at our wedding."

The message was not an apology.

It was a signal.

Ethan wanted Margaret to know he remembered something.

When questioned, Margaret refused to explain.

Then Rachel recognized the cemetery wall in the background.

The photograph had been taken from a section closed to the public.

Behind that wall stood an abandoned chapel.

Police searched it.

Inside they found clothes, food, and a laptop.

Ethan had left minutes earlier.

But the laptop contained a live connection to Harrow.

The two had been communicating.

Not as allies.

As enemies arranging a meeting.

Ethan offered the location of Blackwood's private archive.

Harrow offered safe passage out of the country.

Neither intended to keep the agreement.

Their meeting was scheduled at an abandoned military communications station in West Virginia.

Federal teams surrounded the area.

My father insisted on joining the command operation.

This time, he told me first.

I wanted to stop him.

But our rule was not that no one took risks.

It was that no one faced them alone.

"Come back," I said.

"I will do everything possible."

"That's not a promise."

"It is the honest version."

He kissed Evelyn's head and left.

Surveillance cameras recorded Ethan entering the station through a service tunnel.

Harrow arrived by helicopter.

He brought two guards.

Ethan came alone.

Their voices were captured through a device hidden in Ethan's laptop.

"You tried to have me killed," Ethan said.

"You became uncontrollable."

"I did everything you asked."

"You abused the asset."

"Claire was my wife."

"Claire was a path to the trust."

Ethan's voice hardened.

"She loved me."

"That was useful."

"You promised my father would be avenged."

"Your father was a thief who panicked."

Silence followed.

Harrow had finally spoken the truth Ethan refused to accept.

Thomas Cole was not an innocent man destroyed by my father.

He had joined Sentinel willingly.

Ethan's entire life had been built on Margaret's lie and Harrow's manipulation.

"You used us," Ethan said.

"I used your anger."

"Where is Blackwood's archive?"

"Where is the bank evidence?"

"Claire opened it."

"I know."

"You lost."

Harrow laughed.

"Do you think a ledger destroys men like Blackwood? He will call it a fabrication. He will sacrifice me. He will wait for the public to become tired."

"Then I kill him."

"That solves nothing."

"It solves something for me."

Harrow drew his gun.

Federal agents moved.

But Ethan had anticipated them.

He triggered an explosive charge in the communications room.

The cameras went black.

The blast shook the station.

My father and the tactical team entered through the eastern tunnel.

Smoke filled the corridors.

One of Harrow's guards was dead.

The other surrendered.

Harrow was injured beneath fallen metal.

Ethan stood over him with a gun.

My father aimed from the doorway.

"Put it down."

Ethan looked at him.

"You took my father."

"Your father made his choices."

"My mother said you destroyed him."

"Your mother needed someone else to blame."

Harrow laughed weakly from the floor.

"Listen to him, Ethan. Richard always believed truth could save people."

My father did not look away from Ethan.

"Truth gives people a choice."

Ethan pointed the gun at Harrow's head.

"He deserves to die."

"Yes," my father said.

Everyone froze.

Then my father continued.

"But your daughter deserves to know you had one moment when you could choose differently."

Ethan's face changed.

"Evelyn is not your property. She is not your redemption. But one day, she may ask what you did when you finally understood the truth."

His gun trembled.

Harrow reached toward a hidden weapon beneath the debris.

My father saw it.

"Ethan, move!"

Harrow fired.

Ethan fell.

My father shot Harrow in the shoulder before he could fire again.

Agents rushed forward.

Both men survived.

As paramedics carried Ethan out, he whispered to my father.

"Tell Claire... Blackwood keeps everything beneath Saint Augustine."

Then he lost consciousness.
