Chapter 24

News networks agreed to carry the conversation live with a short delay.

Blackwood believed he was negotiating privately.

He sat before a camera inside Mercy House.

Behind him, monitors showed the dead-man system.

I appeared on a screen from a secure federal location.

"You asked for me," I said.

He smiled.

"You look like your mother."

"You were afraid of her too."

"I respected Evelyn."

"You ordered her murder."

"Harrow ordered it."

"At your direction."

"That has not been proven."

"Your archive proves it."

His smile narrowed.

"You have watched selected recordings interpreted by frightened prosecutors."

"You recorded yourself."

"Context matters."

"Explain the context of imprisoning Rachel."

Blackwood leaned back.

"Rachel was ill."

"Explain the context of drugging me."

"Your husband acted independently."

"Explain the context of forty-three women."

"Institutions make mistakes."

"You built the institution."

He sighed like a patient teacher.

"Claire, countries are not protected by moral purity. They are protected by people willing to make difficult choices."

"Which country was protected when you stole from widows?"

"The financial operations funded assets."

"Which country was protected when Ethan killed Caleb?"

His expression changed.

"That tragedy was never authorized."

"You knew."

"Afterward."

"And you protected him."

"Because Ethan knew sensitive information."

"You valued his silence more than a baby's life."

Blackwood looked toward someone off camera.

He was becoming agitated.

Good.

I continued.

"You told Harrow to medicalize accusations."

"A phrase taken from a long discussion."

"You turned women into diagnoses."

"Some of them were unstable."

"After your doctors drugged them."

"Not all."

The answer slipped out.

He realized it immediately.

Not all.

Which meant some were.

The live audience heard the admission.

Blackwood's attorneys tried contacting the command team.

We continued.

"Where is Harrow?" he asked.

"In custody."

"He will blame me."

"He already did."

"And Ethan?"

"Alive."

His jaw tightened.

"That boy has always been weak."

"You helped make him violent."

"Margaret made him sentimental."

"Sentimental?"

"He confused possession with loyalty."

"You taught him that people were tools."

Blackwood stood.

"Enough."

"Your system is over."

"My system existed before you were born."

"And it ends because the women you buried started speaking."

He laughed.

"Do you think the public will remember their names in a month?"

"I will."

"That changes nothing."

"Rachel will."

His expression darkened.

"Melissa will. Dana will. The women rescued from your facilities will. Their children will."

Blackwood stepped closer to the camera.

"You are one frightened woman holding a premature child."

"Yes."

I did not reject the words.

I used them.

"I am frightened. I am a mother. I was beaten. I was drugged. I was called insane."

He stared at me.

"And I am still here."

The sentence spread across social media before the interview ended.

Blackwood turned away.

"Prepare the transfer," he ordered someone nearby.

Federal negotiators pretended to agree.

While he focused on the broadcast, technical teams traced the dead-man system's internal relay.

It connected through a fiber line beneath the facility.

Agents cut the external connection.

Blackwood did not notice.

The monitors continued displaying a false status screen created by federal technicians.

He believed the threat remained active.

A tactical team entered through a collapsed service tunnel identified from Rachel's old memories.

Blackwood heard the breach too late.

He grabbed a pistol.

The camera continued broadcasting.

"Tell them to stop," he demanded.

"No."

"I will release every file."

"The connection is already cut."

He looked at the monitors.

For the first time, fear appeared.

Not concern.

Not calculation.

Fear.

"You lied."

"You taught everyone how."

The tactical team entered.

Blackwood pointed the gun toward his own head.

My father, watching beside me, whispered, "Don't."

I understood.

Death would let Blackwood escape judgment.

I leaned toward the camera.

"If you die, Harrow tells your story."

Blackwood froze.

"He will say you were afraid."

His pride stopped him.

Only for a second.

But the second was enough.

Agents seized him.

The gun fell.

Stephen Blackwood was arrested live before millions of viewers.

No private exit.

No respectful statement.

No hidden medical facility.

Handcuffs.

Cameras.

Witnesses.

When the feed ended, I turned toward my father.

"Is it over?"

He looked at Evelyn sleeping in the protected bassinet beside us.

"The hunting is over."

But trials had not begun.

Victims had not been restored.

Children had not been found.

Careers had not been rebuilt.

May you like

Truth had entered the room.

Justice was still standing outside.
