Chapter 2 - THE CAMERA

Police executed a search warrant at the house the following morning.

I did not go.

I never wanted to see the utility room again.

Emily stayed with me while Detective Ortiz called.

They found the rope.

They found the ceiling attachment.

They found blood on the floor despite an attempt to clean it.

And they found the camera.

Daniel had not deleted the footage.

Maybe he thought nobody would look.

Maybe people who control others long enough begin believing their own version of reality is stronger than evidence.

The footage did not capture everything clearly.

The camera faced mostly toward the washer and dryer.

But it captured enough.

Daniel entering.

My voice asking him to stop.

The sound of the confrontation.

His statements about needing a son.

Later, him moving through the room after I stopped responding.

No laundry accident.

No fall.

No ambiguity.

Detective Ortiz said:

“Rachel, you do not need to watch it.”

I never did.

People later asked whether I wanted to know exactly what the video showed.

No.

My body already knew.

I did not need visual proof of my own suffering.

The evidence was for the case.

Healing required something else.
