Chapter 5 - DANIEL’S MOTHER CALLED

Daniel’s mother, Linda, called Emily.
Not me.
Smart.
She said Daniel had “made a terrible mistake.”
One mistake.
Emily asked:
“How many hours does a mistake last?”
Linda hung up.
Later, she mailed me a letter.
I read it because part of me still wanted to know whether anyone from Daniel’s family understood.
The first paragraph said:
Daniel has always felt tremendous pressure to continue the family name.
I stopped.
There it was.
Explanation trying to become excuse.
I skipped ahead.
Losing the baby has hurt everyone.
Everyone.
No.
Grace’s death was not a family inconvenience to be shared equally.
Daniel had caused it.
I tore the letter in half.
Then stopped.
I taped it back together.
Not because I wanted it.
Because my attorney might.
That became another skill.
Feel later.
May you like
Preserve first.
