Chapter 5 - THE LIE WAS BIGGER THAN THE LOAN

The loan investigation uncovered another secret.
Gabriel had been telling Gertrude a different story too.
To me:
Gertrude was financially secure and simply demanding.
To Gertrude:
I knew about the debt and had willingly agreed to help.
He maintained two realities at once.
That allowed both women to blame each other.
Gertrude thought I was backing out of a commitment.
I thought she was merely entitled.
Gabriel stayed between us translating everything.
Poorly.
Conveniently.
Then Rebecca obtained emails.
One from Gertrude:
Does Mariana understand the house is depending on this?
Gabriel:
She knows enough. Don’t bring it up. She gets anxious about money.
Another:
What if she sees the statements?
Gabriel:
She doesn’t handle the business accounts.
Then one that hurt more than the others.
Gertrude:
She complains that I expect too much when she visits.
Gabriel:
Keep her busy. She asks fewer questions when she’s focused on helping.
I read it three times.
Keep her busy.
The memorials.
The grocery lists.
The cleaning.
The errands.
The constant demands.
Were they all part of some conspiracy?
Probably not.
Real life is rarely that organized.
But Gabriel had consciously benefited from Gertrude occupying my time.
He knew exhaustion made me less likely to examine finances.
That was enough.
I called him once after reading it.
“Did you mean this?”
Silence.
“Mariana—”
“Did you tell your mother to keep me busy so I wouldn’t ask questions?”
“I was trying to manage two difficult situations.”
I actually laughed.
“I was a difficult situation?”
“That’s not what I meant.”
“You forged my financial consent.”
“I didn’t think of it as forgery.”
“What did you think of it as?”
He had no answer.
I realized then that Gabriel’s greatest talent was not lying.
It was renaming.
Cowardice became peacekeeping.
Deception became protecting me from stress.
Unauthorized debt became family responsibility.
His mother’s cruelty became “putting up with her.”
And when language failed completely—
May you like
he locked doors.
