Chapter 8 - MY DAUGHTER ARRIVED ON A TUESDAY MORNING

Her name was Camila.

She arrived six days before her due date.

Healthy.

Loud.

Furious.

Perfect.

My mother stood beside me.

Gabriel was there too.

That decision surprised some people.

But divorce did not automatically erase his chance to be a father.

He had hurt me profoundly.

He had not harmed our daughter.

Those truths could coexist.

Before Camila was born, Gabriel had completed months of therapy.

He had moved into his own apartment.

He had stopped letting Gertrude manage his life.

More importantly, he stopped asking me to forgive him as proof that he had changed.

When the nurse placed Camila against my chest, Gabriel cried.

I looked at him.

Then at her.

For one brief second, I mourned the family I thought we were going to have.

Then Camila opened her eyes.

And I understood something.

May you like

A family changing shape is not the same thing as a family disappearing.
