Chapter 6 - I FILED FOR DIVORCE BEFORE THE BABY KICKED FOR THE FIRST TIME

I did not divorce Gabriel because his mother dumped water on me.
I divorced him because when everything hidden became visible, he still believed his reasons mattered more than my consent.
The petition was filed while I was seventeen weeks pregnant.
That felt horrible.
And peaceful.
Both can be true.
Gabriel asked for counseling.
I agreed to one mediated session.
Not reconciliation counseling.
Closure.
He sat across from me and cried.
“I love you.”
“I believe you.”
That surprised him.
“Then why are you doing this?”
“Because love did not stop you.”
He went silent.
“You knew my doctor told me to avoid strain.”
“Yes.”
“You still sent me alone to Phoenix.”
He looked down.
“You knew your mother treated me like unpaid help.”
“Yes.”
“You watched her humiliate me and hid.”
His face twisted.
“I was ashamed.”
“So was I.”
That landed.
Then I placed a copy of the guaranty between us.
“And for two years, you made financial decisions using my identity because you knew I would refuse.”
He whispered:
“I thought I could fix it before you ever had to know.”
“That is exactly the problem.”
I put my hand over my stomach.
The baby had not begun kicking strongly yet.
Just tiny fluttering movements I could never tell apart from nerves.
I said:
“I’m about to raise a child.”
Gabriel looked at my stomach.
“I know.”
“I cannot teach our child that consent matters while staying married to someone who treated mine as an inconvenience.”
He started crying harder.
I did too.
May you like
But I did not change my answer.
