Chapter 7 - THE FIRST CLOSED DOOR

Mia was four when she closed a bedroom door by herself.

A full year.

That was how long it took.

We were playing hide-and-seek.

She ran into her room.

Then stopped at the doorway.

I saw her hand tremble on the knob.

She looked at me.

“Mommy stay?”

“I’m right here.”

She slowly pulled the door closed.

Click.

My chest tightened.

Five seconds.

Then it opened.

Mia burst out laughing.

“I did it!”

I dropped to my knees.

“You did.”

Again.

This time ten seconds.

Then thirty.

No forcing.

No counting unless she wanted.

At bedtime, Rosie sat beside her.

Visible seam.

Repaired arm.

Mia whispered:

“Rosie not scared now.”

I smiled.

“Maybe sometimes.”

She thought.

“Okay.”

That answer mattered.

Safe did not mean never scared.

May you like

Safe meant scared with somewhere to go.
