Chapter 9 - THE BIRTHDAY PARTY

Mia turned six in our backyard.
No Lorraine.
No Cassandra.
No whispered family tension.
Just children.
Cake.
A sprinkler.
Too many balloons.
Rosie sat in a small chair beside the birthday cake.
One child asked:
“Why is your doll ripped?”
Mia answered:
“She got hurt.”
The child nodded.
“Cool.”
Then ran away.
That was it.
No shame.
No explanation.
Jackson watched from across the yard.
Later he whispered:
“She’s okay.”
I looked at him.
“She’s better.”
Different.
He nodded.
