Chapter 7 - PATRICIA’S REAL FEAR WAS NEVER THE STAIN
The forensic accountant eventually explained Whitmore Legacy Management.
Patricia had serious financial problems.
Not poverty.
Something stranger.
An expensive life supported by shrinking resources.
The estate cost enormous amounts to maintain.
Several investments had underperformed.
Marcus’s business owed money to an entity Patricia controlled.
The annual gala projected wealth and influence that had become increasingly expensive to sustain.
The money Claire transferred helped cover obligations and the condo.
Some remained traceable.
Some had already been spent.
Then another fact emerged.
Patricia had encouraged Claire to move marital assets partly because she expected me to challenge future transfers once divorce began.
Again:
Not sophisticated criminal mastermind behavior.
Family entitlement dressed as asset planning.
Patricia believed Whitmore money should remain under Whitmore control.
It apparently did not matter that much of the transferred money came from income Claire and I had built during our marriage.
Then Rachel showed me a message from Patricia to Claire.
Dated November.
Once you and Lily are settled downtown, Daniel will have to negotiate through us if he wants access. Do not give him room to dictate terms.
Through us.
Not through Claire.
Through Patricia.
That sentence explained more than anything else.
This had never been merely about ending a marriage.
Patricia wanted Lily inside the same system that had kept Claire obedient.
Approval.
Money.
Access.
Family reputation.
Control disguised as protection.
And the moment Lily spilled juice in front of important people, Patricia treated a five-year-old exactly the way she treated every person who threatened her image.
Correct them.
Publicly.
Immediately.
Force obedience.
