Chapter 8 - THE JUDGE DIDN’T CARE WHO SAT AT PATRICIA’S TABLE
The temporary custody hearing lasted hours.
Not minutes.
No dramatic speech solved it.
The judge reviewed medical documentation.
Video.
Witness statements.
Claire’s petition.
My threat toward Marcus.
The financial issues were largely handled separately.
As they should have been.
The judge questioned my language that night.
So did Rachel beforehand.
I did not defend it.
“I should not have threatened him.”
Then:
“I was carrying my crying five-year-old daughter toward the exit after watching her grandmother strike her. Marcus physically blocked the door. That explains my state of mind. It does not make my words appropriate.”
The judge watched me for several seconds.
Then moved on.
Claire’s attorney tried to characterize the gala as an isolated lapse by Patricia.
The video made minimization difficult.
More importantly, Claire herself had supported Patricia immediately after the slap.
Temporary orders were entered.
Lily remained primarily with me while evaluations continued.
Claire received parenting time under structured conditions.
Patricia had no contact with Lily.
Marcus could not act as an intermediary.
Nobody “won.”
My daughter got breathing room.
That was better.
Outside the courthouse, reporters waited because of the Whitmore name and the gala guest list.
Rachel told me:
“Do not litigate through cameras.”
I didn’t.
I carried Lily’s backpack to the car.
