Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Shadows

For the next two weeks, Norah’s life assumed a disciplined, intense rhythm.
Every morning at nine, she descended to Dominic’s private study on the main floor.
The room was vast, lined with ancient leather books, dark oak paneling, and heavy velvet curtains that kept out the bright sun.
She sat at a glass conference table across from Dominic, sifting through thousands of digital shell company transactions, offshore wire transfers, and cash receipts from luxury hotels, docks, and casinos.
She worked with surgical precision.
Dominic rarely left her side.
While he managed his territorial disputes and met with lieutenants, he kept his eyes on her.
Norah quickly realized that the Gallow family was split into two factions.
There was Dominic, who sought to legitimize their holdings through real estate and clean shipping, and there was his older cousin, Julian—a cruel, aggressive man who managed the street level drug trades and illegal gambling rings.
Julian did not like Norah.
On a rainy Thursday afternoon, while Dominic was taking a private call on the balcony, Julian entered the study without knocking.
He was a thick set man with greasy hair and a silver tooth, smelling faintly of sour wine.
He walked over to Norah’s desk, leaning down until his shadow covered her screen.
"So you're the little virgin auditor Dominic is keeping like a prize horse," Julian sneered, his yellowed eyes scanning her body up and down.
Norah did not shrink back.
She saved her file and met his gaze evenly. "I'm the chief auditor, Mr. Gallow. And you're leaning on my active ledger."
Julian’s face darkened. He reached out to grab her wrist. "Listen here, girl—"
Before his fingers could touch her skin, a heavy hand grabbed Julian’s collar from behind and slammed him violently against the oak bookshelf.
Books tumbled to the floor.
Dominic stood over his cousin, his eyes wild with a lethal, icy rage that made the room temperature plunge.
"Touch her again," Dominic whispered, his voice dangerously low as he pressed his forearm into Julian's neck, "and I will cut your hand off and feed it to the dogs."
Julian choked, his face turning red. "She's an outsider, Dom! She's poking into my turf!"
"She works for me!" Dominic roared, hurling Julian toward the open door. "Get out of my house!"
Julian stumbled into the hallway, glaring at Norah with pure hatred before turning and hurrying away.
Dominic stood in the middle of the room, his chest heaving, his tailored suit rumpled.
He turned toward Norah, his dark eyes instantly softening with concern.
"Did he touch you?" he asked, his voice rough.
May you like
"No," Norah whispered, standing up slowly. "You stopped him."
Dominic closed the distance between them in two long strides, grabbing her face in both of his warm hands.
