Chapter 5 - THE MISSING PAGE IN ELEANOR’S LEDGER

Claire was placed under federal protection.

Emily agreed to speak with her only after investigators confirmed she was not working for the Crown Circle.

The first conversation took place in a government office with white walls and no windows.

Daniel waited outside.

Emily sat across from the mother she had buried twenty-two years earlier.

Claire looked thinner than Emily remembered. A scar ran from her neck beneath the collar of her shirt.

“Start with my father,” Emily said.

“Samuel was your father.”

“You know what I mean.”

Claire lowered her eyes.

Years earlier, she had become involved with Adrian Vale while investigating the Crown Circle. Adrian claimed he wanted to escape his father’s criminal network.

Claire believed him.

When she became pregnant, Adrian promised they would disappear together.

Instead, he reported her location to Charles Bellweather.

Samuel Turner, a security technician hired to install alarms at one of the Circle’s warehouses, found Claire being held there.

He helped her escape.

Samuel knew she was pregnant with another man’s child and married her anyway.

“He raised you because he loved you,” Claire said. “Not because I deceived him.”

“Why did you leave me?”

“I didn’t.”

Emily’s car accident had not killed Claire.

Adrian’s men staged the collision and abducted her from the hospital before Samuel arrived.

A body from another accident was misidentified as Claire because dental records had been altered.

For years, Claire was moved between safe houses and threatened with Emily’s death if she attempted escape.

She eventually got away, but by then Samuel had changed addresses and removed Emily from public records.

Claire feared that contacting them would reveal their location.

“So you watched us?” Emily asked.

“From a distance.”

“You watched Dad get sick?”

Claire’s face crumpled.

“I did not know until it was too late.”

Samuel discovered the truth about the Calder Museum forgery through Emily’s files. He contacted Claire using an emergency number she had left decades earlier.

Together, they planned to expose Adrian.

Before they could meet, Samuel was poisoned with a radioactive substance concealed inside industrial cleaning powder.

His illness was diagnosed as blood cancer.

By the time doctors understood the exposure, he was dying.

“Adrian killed him,” Emily said.

“Adrian ordered it. Cecelia Wynn arranged access to his apartment.”

Emily stood.

She crossed the room and pressed both hands against the wall.

For two years, she had blamed herself for missing signs of her father’s illness.

Now she learned it had been murder.

Claire approached but did not touch her.

“I am sorry.”

“That sentence does not cover twenty-two years.”

“I know.”

“You let me bury an empty idea of you.”

“I know.”

“You let Dad die thinking he failed to protect me.”

Claire’s voice broke.

“He did protect you. Every day.”

Emily turned.

“Then help me finish what he started.”

Claire explained that Eleanor’s archive contained ownership records for thousands of stolen objects, but it also contained names of officials who helped the Crown Circle operate.

Eleanor divided the archive into three parts.

The Saint Orison Diamond authenticated the records.

The Midnight Necklace contained a mechanical map.

A handwritten ledger provided the cipher.

Margaret had the ledger in the Bellweather bank vault.

But one page was missing.

Claire stole it before her disappearance.

Vanessa now possessed the necklace.

Adrian believed Claire still had the missing page.

She did not.

Samuel had hidden it.

“Where?” Emily asked.

“In the first house you lived in.”

The Turner family’s small home outside Worcester had been sold after Samuel’s death.

The new owners allowed federal investigators to search.

Behind a loose fireplace brick, Emily found a child’s drawing she remembered making at age five.

It showed three stick figures beneath a yellow sun.

Samuel had written numbers along the back.

Not random numbers.

Gemstone measurements.

When decoded using Eleanor’s ledger, they formed an address in Boston’s old financial district.

The building had once belonged to Bellweather Shipping.

It was scheduled for demolition in three days.

Inside the basement, investigators found an iron deposit box embedded in concrete.

The black diamond opened the first lock.

The missing ledger page opened the second.

The Midnight Necklace was required for the third.

Without it, the archive remained inaccessible.

Vanessa contacted Daniel that evening.

She was crying.

“Adrian is going to kill Julian.”

“Why do you care?”

“He is not Charles Bellweather’s son.”

“We know.”

“He is Cecelia Wynn’s brother. Adrian paid him to marry me.”

“Where are you?”

“At the Vale estate.”

Daniel signaled investigators to trace the call.

Vanessa continued.

“My father promised that after the auction, I could leave. He lied.”

“You framed Emily and fled twice.”

“I know.”

“You helped steal the necklace.”

“I know.”

“What do you want?”

“Protection.”

“In exchange for what?”

“The necklace and Adrian’s records.”

Daniel looked toward Emily.

She shook her head.

It was too easy.

Daniel asked Vanessa to prove she had the necklace.

A photograph arrived.

Vanessa held the Midnight Necklace beside that day’s newspaper.

Behind her stood a wall painted deep green.

Claire recognized it as the library of Adrian’s coastal estate in Rhode Island.

Federal agents prepared a rescue operation.

Emily insisted on accompanying them because she could identify the necklace.

Daniel objected.

“You are not trained for this.”

“Neither were you when you followed me into the auction.”

“That was a controlled operation.”

“We were held at gunpoint.”

“A poorly controlled operation.”

At midnight, agents surrounded the Vale estate.

Vanessa met Daniel and Emily in a greenhouse near the cliffs.

She carried the necklace.

Her black dress from the Bellweather gala hung inside a garment bag behind her.

“I kept it,” she said, noticing Emily looking. “I thought I might need proof that I had been there.”

“You have video proof,” Emily replied.

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“I was jealous of you before that night.”

“You barely knew me.”

“Daniel trusted you.”

“He asked for security footage.”

“He never looked at me the way he looked at you after everyone turned against you.”

Daniel said, “This is not about jealousy.”

“It began there.”

Vanessa handed Emily the necklace.

Before Emily could inspect it, the greenhouse lights activated.

Adrian stood on the balcony above them.

Cecelia Wynn appeared beside him.

Vanessa had not escaped.

She had lured them there.

Armed men closed the doors.

Adrian smiled down at Emily.

May you like

“Welcome home, daughter.”
