Chapter 6 - THE FIRE AT BELLWEATHER HOUSE
Adrian demanded the Saint Orison Diamond and Eleanor’s missing ledger page.
Emily had brought neither.
The necklace Vanessa handed her was another forgery.
“Did you truly believe I would place the original in her hands?” Adrian asked.
Vanessa stood beneath the balcony, pale and shaking.
“You promised not to hurt them.”
“I promised you would not have to watch.”
Daniel moved in front of Emily.
Adrian laughed.
“Still rescuing employees, Daniel?”
“She is not an employee.”
“No. She is my daughter.”
Emily’s voice remained steady.
“Samuel Turner was my father.”
“Samuel was a repairman who mistook possession for parenthood.”
“He protected me from you.”
Adrian’s smile disappeared.
Cecelia descended the stairs.
She wore the same gold dress from the gala.
“You cost me the Calder directorship,” she told Emily.
“You framed me before I could cost you anything.”
“You noticed details no junior conservator should have noticed.”
“That was my job.”
“No. Your job was to admire the objects and remain grateful to stand near them.”
Cecelia admitted using Emily’s museum credentials. She arranged Samuel’s poisoning when he began asking questions. She had also recruited Vanessa through Adrian.
Vanessa grew up believing her father was dead. At eighteen, Adrian contacted her and slowly built control through money, secrets, and threats.
He encouraged her relationship with Daniel.
The engagement gave her access to Bellweather House.
“She was supposed to replace the necklace quietly,” Cecelia said. “Then Emily saw too much.”
Vanessa whispered, “I never meant for her to get hurt.”
Emily looked at her.
“You struck me because you believed nobody would stop you.”
Vanessa began crying.
“That is what my father taught me.”
Adrian ordered his men to search Daniel and Emily.
Before they moved, gunfire sounded outside.
Federal agents breached the estate.
Adrian grabbed Vanessa and held a weapon to her head.
“Call them off.”
Daniel lifted his hands.
Vanessa’s eyes met Emily’s.
Then she drove her heel into Adrian’s foot.
He fired.
The bullet shattered a greenhouse window.
Vanessa dropped.
Emily pulled her behind a stone planter.
Daniel tackled Adrian as agents entered.
Cecelia escaped through a service tunnel with the authentic necklace.
Adrian was arrested.
Vanessa survived with cuts from broken glass.
She agreed to cooperate fully.
For the first time, she described the plan at Bellweather House without minimizing her choices.
She had placed the necklace in Emily’s handbag because Adrian instructed her to create a public scandal. While police focused on a housekeeper, Cecelia would remove documents from Margaret’s study.
The fake necklace was meant to be “recovered,” ending questions about the missing original.
Vanessa’s assault had not been part of the plan.
“That was me,” she said. “No one ordered it.”
Emily appreciated the admission more than an excuse.
But she did not forgive her.
Not yet.
Cecelia fled Rhode Island.
Investigators believed she would target Bellweather House because Margaret still possessed the ledger.
Daniel called home.
No one answered.
They reached the estate at dawn.
Smoke covered the hill.
Flames rose from the east wing.
Cecelia’s men had attacked the security detail and set multiple fires.
Margaret escaped through the garden.
Nathan Cole suffered smoke inhalation while rescuing Lydia, who remained under house arrest pending trial.
The old servants’ wing burned fastest.
Claire’s tapes were still inside.
Emily ran toward the house.
Daniel caught her.
“You cannot go in.”
“My mother’s evidence—”
“Is not worth your life.”
“The tapes prove what happened to her.”
“You are what happened to her. You survived.”
A section of the roof collapsed.
Emily watched flames consume the passage where Claire had hidden.
For the first time, Daniel held her.
Not as an employer steadying an injured worker.
Not as a distant member of a newly discovered family.
He held her because she was grieving.
Emily pressed her face against his coat and let herself cry.
Firefighters contained the blaze by noon.
Most of the central mansion survived, but the east wing was destroyed.
Margaret’s ledger had been removed from the vault before the fire.
Cecelia had it.
She also had the necklace.
But she did not have the black diamond or the missing page.
The archive remained sealed.
Investigators searched the ruins.
Among the ashes, Emily found a brass object from Claire’s hidden room.
A key.
It opened a narrow compartment inside the old tape recorder.
One final cassette had survived because it was encased in metal.
Claire’s voice played through a damaged speaker.
“If the Circle burns the house, follow the river beneath the glass.”
Daniel studied the estate plans.
Bellweather House had no river beneath it.
But the conservatory floor contained a long mosaic of blue glass, designed to resemble water.
Margaret remembered Eleanor supervising its construction personally.
Beneath one glass tile, they found a map.
The map revealed a tunnel connecting Bellweather House to the abandoned Bellweather Shipping building in Boston.
The archive had never been transported through public roads.
It was connected to the house by an underground route built generations earlier for moving valuables secretly.
Cecelia had the necklace and ledger.
If she found the tunnel entrance, she could reach the archive.
Then Margaret noticed a date written beside the map.
December 14.
Three days away.
Daniel and Vanessa’s planned wedding date.
Vanessa had secretly booked Bellweather House for a midnight ceremony before the gala.
Cecelia intended to open the archive during the wedding, when the mansion would be full and security attention divided.
Even after the engagement collapsed, she intended to follow the schedule.
On December 14, the tunnel locks would reset according to Eleanor’s original mechanical system.
For one hour, all three components could open the archive.
Emily looked toward the burned east wing.
Cecelia was not running.
She was waiting for the only night the vault could be opened.
