Chapter 7 - THE BRIDE WHO VANISHED BEFORE MIDNIGHT

Vanessa agreed to help stage the wedding.

The decision shocked everyone.

“You want me to wear the dress?” she asked.

Agent Hale nodded.

“Cecelia believes you are cooperating with her. We need her to think the ceremony is proceeding.”

“Daniel will not be the groom.”

“No.”

Vanessa looked toward Daniel.

For the first time, she seemed embarrassed rather than angry.

“I suppose that would have been too much to ask.”

Daniel did not respond.

The plan was dangerous.

Bellweather House would appear to host an intimate wedding. Selected undercover agents would pose as caterers, musicians, guests, and private security.

Margaret publicly announced that Daniel and Vanessa had reconciled after a “misunderstanding.”

Social media exploded.

Commentators condemned Daniel.

Others called Emily a liar paid to create drama.

The video of the slap circulated again.

Emily had never hated fame more.

She remained hidden inside the estate while helping decode Eleanor’s map.

The tunnel entrance lay beneath the conservatory fountain.

At midnight on December 14, a counterweight system would lower the stone basin and reveal steps.

Cecelia needed the Midnight Necklace to activate a track mechanism inside the tunnel.

The ledger provided directions.

The black diamond opened the final vault.

Because Cecelia lacked the diamond, investigators expected her to kidnap Emily or Margaret and force its surrender.

Instead, she kidnapped Claire.

Claire disappeared from the federal safe house the morning of the wedding.

A guard had been bribed.

A video arrived showing Claire tied to a chair inside an unknown industrial building.

Cecelia spoke from behind the camera.

“Bring the black diamond to the wedding. No police within the conservatory.”

Emily watched the video twice.

In the background, a bell rang every thirty seconds.

Daniel identified it as a railway crossing alarm.

The safe house abduction occurred ninety minutes earlier. Claire could still be near the city.

Agents searched warehouses beside active rail lines.

None matched.

Emily noticed white dust on Claire’s shoes.

Not industrial dust.

Plaster.

The industrial room was a set.

Cecelia had filmed Claire inside the unfinished west wing of Bellweather House, only yards from the investigators.

They found the room empty.

A service tunnel led from it toward the conservatory.

Cecelia had already entered the estate.

The wedding began at nine.

Vanessa walked down the grand staircase wearing an ivory gown.

Guests raised champagne glasses.

Daniel waited near the ballroom doors in a black tuxedo, performing the role expected of him.

Emily watched from the security room.

At 10:17, a camera in the garden failed.

At 10:34, two caterers disappeared from their assigned stations.

At 11:02, the conservatory temperature rose seven degrees.

Someone had activated machinery beneath the floor.

Emily notified Agent Hale.

Then every security feed switched to recorded footage.

The Crown Circle had taken control.

Vanessa reached the ballroom.

Daniel offered his arm.

She whispered, “Cecelia is here.”

“How do you know?”

“She sent me a message.”

“What did it say?”

“Runaway brides survive.”

Daniel looked toward the staircase.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Something is wrong.”

The lights dimmed for the ceremonial dance.

Vanessa disappeared through a side door.

Undercover agents followed, but found only her wedding veil on the floor.

A trail of blood led toward the servants’ corridor.

Emily left the security room despite orders.

In the passage, she found Vanessa leaning against the wall.

The blood belonged to a guard she had struck while escaping.

“You were helping Cecelia,” Emily said.

“At first.”

Vanessa opened her hand.

Inside lay the genuine Midnight Necklace.

“She gave it to me so I could enter the tunnel.”

“Where is Claire?”

“Below the conservatory.”

“Why come to me?”

“Because Cecelia plans to seal everyone inside and burn the house again.”

Emily took the necklace.

“You expect me to trust you?”

“No.”

Vanessa pulled back her sleeve.

A tracking device had been cut from beneath her skin.

“Adrian implanted it when I was nineteen. Cecelia used the same system. I have spent ten years doing whatever they asked because I believed there was nowhere I could go.”

“That does not excuse what you did.”

“I know.”

“Why change now?”

Vanessa looked toward the ballroom.

“Because when everyone thought you were a thief, you still stood there and told the truth. When everyone discovered I lied, you did not hit me back.”

“That is a very low standard.”

“It was higher than anything in my family.”

The conservatory clock began striking midnight.

The fountain lowered.

Cecelia emerged holding a gun to Claire’s back.

She had Eleanor’s ledger tucked beneath her arm.

“Bring the diamond,” she ordered.

Emily entered with the replica stone.

Daniel and federal agents waited beyond the glass doors.

Cecelia had attached explosives to the conservatory supports.

Any forced entry could bring down the roof.

Emily approached slowly.

Claire’s eyes filled with fear.

“I am sorry,” she whispered.

“Not now.”

Emily gave Cecelia the replica diamond.

Cecelia inserted it into the tunnel lock.

Nothing happened.

Her face changed.

“You gave me a fake.”

“You taught me to recognize them.”

Cecelia raised the gun.

Vanessa stepped from behind the fountain and placed the real diamond into the lock.

The steps opened.

“What are you doing?” Emily demanded.

Vanessa looked at her.

“Getting Claire away from the explosives.”

Cecelia forced all three women into the tunnel.

The entrance closed above them.

Daniel reached the fountain seconds later.

The conservatory was empty.

Beneath the estate, Emily, Claire, Vanessa, and Cecelia walked through a corridor lined with blue glass.

The walls reflected them in fractured pieces.

At the far end stood a steel door bearing the broken crown.

Cecelia inserted the necklace into a mechanical slot.

The door opened.

Beyond it lay Eleanor’s archive.

Hundreds of boxes.

Paintings wrapped in canvas.

Shelves of ledgers.

Film canisters.

Passports.

Letters.

Enough evidence to destroy families, museums, governments, and fortunes.

Cecelia stared with tears of triumph.

Then Vanessa removed the black diamond from the lock.

The steel door began closing.

Cecelia lunged.

Vanessa threw the stone to Emily.

“Run!”

A gunshot thundered through the vault.

May you like

Vanessa fell.
