Chapter 2

The Anatomy of a Lie

The fallout was instantaneous. The Saint Aurelia Ballroom dissolved into utter chaos. High-society guests scrambled for the exits, not wanting to be associated with what was clearly becoming a criminal crime scene, while others pulled out their phones, filming the confrontation. Within minutes, the first clips of the "Grave Bride" were uploaded online, beginning their viral ascent across social media platforms worldwide.

Douglas Mercer collapsed into a nearby chair, clutching his chest. "Caroline... we thought you died in Malibu. The dental records..."

"The dental records were switched, Father," Caroline said, her eyes never leaving Juliette, who was now trembling with a mixture of rage and panic. "Or should I ask your darling youngest daughter who paid the coroner to misidentify the body of a homeless woman caught in the fire?"

"That's a lie!" Juliette screamed, her voice cracking. "She’s an impostor! Someone get her out of here! Marcus Vance, you’re broke and desperate, you fabricated this for money!"

Detective Vance stepped forward, opening the folder on the table. "I didn't fabricate the financial transfers, Juliette. Ten years ago, three weeks after the fire, a offshore account registered under your initials transferred two million dollars to Dr. Abel Sterling—the chief medical examiner of Malibu. And for the past nine years, that same account has been funding a private, unregistered psychiatric facility in the high desert near Ridgecrest."

The ballroom grew quiet again as Vance pulled out a series of medical logs. "A facility where a patient named 'Jane Doe' was kept under heavy sedation, suffering from severe burns and trauma, denied any contact with the outside world. A patient whose DNA, tested yesterday by an independent lab, matches Douglas Mercer by 99.9%."

Estelle Mercer, who had been sitting in a drug-induced stupor for most of the wedding, suddenly stood up. The mention of her lost daughter seemed to pierce through the fog of her medication. She looked at Caroline, staring past the horrific burn scars, focusing on the deep, soulful brown eyes.

"Caroline?" Estelle whispered, taking a trembling step forward. "My baby?"

"Don't go near her, Mom!" Juliette yelled, grabbing her mother's arm roughly. "She's dangerous! Look at her, she's a monster!"

"The only monster in this room is you, Juliette," Caroline said quietly. She reached out and gently pulled her mother away from Juliette’s grip. When Estelle felt Caroline's touch—rough from scars but inherently familiar—she let out a heartbreaking sob and collapsed into her oldest daughter's arms, weeping uncontrollably.

Juliette looked around the room. Her groom, a wealthy hedge-fund heir named Julian, was already backing away, removing his boutonniere with a look of sheer disgust. Her friends, the influencers and socialites who had fawned over her an hour ago, were hiding behind their phones, recording her downfall.

"This isn't over," Juliette hissed, her eyes flashing with venom. "You think you can just walk in here with some fake papers and ruin my life? I built this family's legacy while you were rotting away! I am the face of Mercer Biotech!"

"Not anymore," Detective Vance said, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "Juliette Mercer, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, kidnapping, fraud, and identity theft. You have the right to remain silent."

As the metal cuffs clicked around Juliette’s wrists, contrasting sharply with her designer satin sleeves, she didn't cry. She stared at Caroline with pure, unadulterated hatred. "You should have died in that fire," she whispered.

"I know," Caroline replied, her voice steady. "But I learned how to breathe smoke."
