Chapter 4

Secrets in the Ash

With the new evidence secured, the legal noose began to tighten around Juliette. Refused bail due to being a flight risk, she was held in a high-security detention center, her couture dresses replaced by a coarse orange jumpsuit. Yet, even behind bars, Juliette remained defiant, refusing to cooperate with prosecutors.

Meanwhile, Caroline knew that healing her life required finding out the absolute truth about the night that started it all: the Malibu fire.

Accompanied by Marcus Vance, Caroline drove up the Pacific Coast Highway to the ruins of the Malibu retirement home. The site had never been rebuilt; it stood as a blackened, skeletal monument against the crashing waves of the ocean.

"The official report said faulty wiring in the west wing," Vance said as they walked through the charred remains of the top floor. "But I always doubted it. The fire started in three different locations simultaneously. By the time the fire department arrived, the security cameras had been wiped."

Caroline stood in the center of what used to be her bedroom. She closed her eyes, letting the sound of the ocean fade, replacing it with the memory of that terrifying night.

"I remember waking up because the room was hot," Caroline murmured, her voice trembling. "The door was locked from the outside. I screamed for help. I heard someone in the hallway. I thought it was a nurse... but then I saw a shadow under the door. It wasn't moving. It was just standing there, watching the smoke pour into my room."

"Did you see who it was?" Vance asked gently.

"No," Caroline said, opening her eyes. "But right before the glass shattered and the ceiling collapsed, I heard a ringtone. A very specific ringtone. It was a classical piano piece—Chopin’s Nocturne in E-flat major. Juliette had just set it as her ringtone that summer."

Vance’s expression turned deadly serious. "Juliette wasn't trying to rescue you. She locked you in."

"But why?" Caroline cried out, the pain of betrayal cutting deeper than any physical burn. "We were sisters! Why did she hate me that much?"

"Because of the inheritance," a voice spoke from the shadows of the doorway.

They turned to see Douglas Mercer walking into the ruins, looking old and broken. He had a flask of whiskey in his hand, his clothes wrinkled.

"Douglas," Vance warned, stepping in front of Caroline.

"No, let him speak," Caroline said, stepping around the detective. "Tell me, Father. What inheritance?"

Douglas took a long swig from his flask, tears streaming down his face. "Your grandfather’s will, Caroline. He hated my biotech work—thought it was arrogant. He left eighty percent of the family fortune directly to you, because you wanted to go into charity and medicine. Juliette was only supposed to get a small stipend. The will stipulated that if you died before the age of twenty-five without heirs, the entire fortune would revert to Juliette."

Caroline felt the world tilt beneath her feet. "And you knew this?"

"I didn't know Juliette knew," Douglas sobbed, falling to his knees in the ash. "I swear to God, Caroline! I thought it was an accident! When Juliette showed me a 'new' version of the will after your death, leaving everything to her and the company, I was too grief-stricken to question it. I wanted to save Mercer Biotech. I let myself be blinded by her lies."

Caroline looked down at her father, feeling a profound sense of pity override her anger. "You traded my life for your company, Father. And in the end, you lost both."
