Chapter 5 - The Photograph Hidden Behind the Chapel Wall

They did not go alone.

They also did not bring visible police.

Leo coordinated with federal contact through attorney because archive implicated current officials.

Clare was surprised he had federal contact.

He said:

“Everyone has one eventually.”

Disturbing.

Old ferry terminal stood abandoned beside East River.

Midnight.

Wind.

Leo and Clare entered front.

Mateo's team hidden.

Federal agents farther perimeter.

Tommy stayed estate.

Good.

Inside terminal lights dead.

Single work lamp at platform edge.

Chair.

Evelyn Brooks tied.

Alive.

Bruised.

Across from her:

Adrian Vale.

Not Sebastian.

Vale smiled.

“Mr. Rossi.”

Leo said:

“Where is my brother?”

“Still jumps to blood.”

“Answer.”

“Sebastian isn't your problem tonight.”

Clare stepped.

“Release Evelyn.”

Vale looked at her.

“So you're Clare.”

She hated how many strangers knew.

“You made this messy.”

She said:

“You kidnapped my brother.”

“He stole.”

“You inflated debt.”

“Business.”

“You kidnapped journalist.”

“She kept refusing reasonable requests.”

Leo almost moved.

Clare touched sleeve.

He stopped.

Vale noticed.

Interesting.

“You changed.”

He told Leo.

“No.”

Leo said.

“I started listening.”

Vale laughed.

Then demanded archive.

Original Antonio boxes.

Why?

Sebastian wanted leverage restored.

Political network weakening.

Old secrets still valuable.

Some current descendants.

Legacy corruption.

Leo said:

“You really think I brought it?”

Vale looked at Clare.

“The key?”

“Wrong century.”

She answered.

Evelyn suddenly spoke.

“Don't give him anything.”

Vale struck her.

Leo stepped.

Guns appeared from shadows.

Three Vale men.

Leo stopped.

Evelyn looked toward Clare.

Then down.

Her shoe.

Clare saw.

Small blinking light.

Tracker?

No.

Phone partly hidden beneath chair leg?

Evelyn had loosened binding enough to drop recorder.

Clare needed distraction.

She began humming.

The song.

Everyone stared.

Vale's expression changed.

“You know it too?”

“Apparently your whole criminal network needs better hobbies.”

She sang louder.

Vale became angry.

“Stop.”

Why?

The song bothered him.

Because Sebastian?

Clare continued.

“Hush now, the winter is long—”

Vale shouted:

“Shut up!”

Leo realized.

“Sebastian hates it.”

Vale looked at him.

There.

Why?

Sebastian had heard Elena sing it to Leo when children.

Perhaps song represented what he never had.

Antonio's first wife died early.

Elena treated Sebastian kindly but he resented her bond with Leo.

Jealousy seeded betrayal.

Clare kept singing.

Vale walked toward her.

“Shut your mouth.”

That moved him away from Evelyn.

Evelyn kicked recorder toward doorway.

Federal agent saw signal? Maybe not.

But Mateo did.

Then lights burst on.

Agents.

“Federal officers!”

Chaos.

Vale's men raised weapons.

One fired.

No graphic details.

Mateo tackled Clare behind concrete pillar.

Leo engaged one man.

Agents overwhelmed.

Vale ran toward river exit.

Evelyn screamed:

“He has detonator!”

What?

Charges under platform?

Vale threatened destroy evidence? Terminal rigged.

Leo chased.

Clare yelled:

“Leo!”

He stopped halfway.

Old instinct said pursue enemy.

New instinct asked:

What else?

He turned back.

“Bomb?”

Evelyn said Vale told her if police came he would blow dock fuel storage.

Agents evacuated.

Vale escaped by boat during confusion.

But no explosion.

Detonator bluff?

Later found small charges, not enough massive blast.

Still.

Leo chose people over chase.

Important.

Evelyn freed.

She explained ledger.

Tommy sold it to her six months earlier.

She investigated Rossi blackmail network.

Then Sebastian contacted pretending whistleblower.

Fed information.

Used her to expose Vincent-era remnants while protecting his own role.

When Evelyn realized Sebastian appeared in original video and payments, he moved.

She copied files to remote server before kidnapping.

Good journalist.

“Where is Sebastian?”

She had one clue.

Photograph sent from him.

Old chapel wall.

Behind Rossi estate chapel stone.

Not just archive.

Photograph itself showed something hidden farther inside cavity.

A smaller compartment.

They had missed.

Back estate, remove inner panel.

Found photograph.

Antonio Rossi with two boys:

Sebastian, eighteen.

Leo, ten.

Elena between.

On back:

One son will inherit my name. One will inherit my enemies.

Antonio handwriting.

Under photograph another item:

birth certificate.

Sebastian Rossi's legal father not Antonio.

A man named Marco DeLuca.

Clare looked at Leo.

“Your half-brother isn't your father's son.”

Leo laughed bitterly.

“Family gets easier.”

Elena knew.

Antonio knew.

Sebastian knew?

Probably discovered as teenager.

Antonio still raised him publicly but inheritance changed when Leo born.

Jealousy suddenly had structural root.

Sebastian believed Leo stole identity, mother, empire.

But Elena's letters suggested she tried loving him.

Sebastian rejected.

Then final hidden letter addressed Sebastian.

Never delivered.

Elena:

You believe Leonardo replaced you. He did not. Antonio made both of you compete for a chair neither child should have wanted.

Clare read aloud.

Leo quiet.

I loved you before I knew who your father was and after. Blood did not change that. You left because Antonio taught you love could be measured in inheritance. It cannot.

Leo stopped her.

Enough.

He looked at photograph.

“My brother built his life around a lie too.”

Clare said:

“That doesn't make what he did okay.”

“No.”

She appreciated.

Then Evelyn said:

“I know where he is going.”

Everyone looked.

Sebastian had been liquidating holdings into US.

Buying abandoned DeLuca textile property in Rhode Island.

Near original fire site.

Why?

Symbolism.

Or final archive?

Maybe Marco DeLuca left something.

They drove Rhode Island.

Old textile mill.

No Sebastian.

But room prepared.

Walls covered photographs of Leo.

Clare.

Tommy.

Mrs. Gable.

Evelyn.

Every step watched.

On desk:

Invitation.

LEO — COME TO THE HOUSE WHERE MOTHER DIED. BRING CLARE. SHE DESERVES TO KNOW WHY ELENA CHOSE HER.

Clare's stomach turned.

There was still something about her.

Not random kindness.

Not merely hospice.

Something Elena knew.

May you like

And for first time, Clare was afraid the truth might reach farther back than she wanted.
