Chapter 6 - Someone Inside the Rossi Family Had Buried the Truth

Clare did not sleep.
At four, she found Mrs. Gable in kitchen.
“Why did Elena choose me?”
Mrs. Gable looked away.
“Kindness.”
“Not enough.”
“Clare—”
“Stop protecting me.”
Mrs. Gable sighed.
Then told final secret.
Clare's mother, Margaret Donnelly, had worked briefly for Elena Rossi twenty-eight years earlier.
Not as maid.
As nurse.
After Leo was born, Elena suffered severe postpartum complications.
Margaret cared for her privately.
They became friends.
Clare was infant then.
Elena held her.
Years later Margaret left Rossi household after witnessing Antonio's violence.
Moved Boston.
She never told Clare.
Before dying, Margaret visited Elena secretly in hospice.
Clare froze.
“My mother died nine years ago.”
“Yes.”
“Elena died five years ago.”
“They met four years before Elena died.”
Clare remembered mother disappearing for one weekend.
Said visiting old friend.
Elena asked Margaret to help deliver letters to Leo.
Margaret refused out of fear for children.
Clare and Tommy.
Then after Margaret died, Elena recognized Clare by surname and photograph she carried.
So Clare's arrival at hospice job looked like coincidence—
but was it?
Mrs. Gable said she had anonymously recommended Clare for job through staffing agency after learning Margaret died.
Clare stared.
Again.
“You put me there?”
“Yes.”
Everything in her life seemed arranged by old women with secrets.
Mrs. Gable said:
“I wanted Elena to have someone connected to Margaret.”
“Without telling me.”
“I was afraid you'd refuse.”
“Exactly why you should have told me.”
Mrs. Gable nodded.
No defense.
Clare's anger exhausted itself.
“So she knew me as baby.”
“Yes.”
“That's why trusted me.”
“Partly.”
Clare sat.
Her mother had been part of story.
Not criminal.
A nurse who saw danger and left.
Then why Sebastian wanted Clare?
Because Margaret had taken something when she left.
A photograph.
Or key?
Mrs. Gable didn't know.
Clare remembered mother's old sewing box.
Stored with Tommy.
Could contain.
They searched.
Inside false bottom:
small cassette.
Label:
ELENA — FOR M
Audio.
Elena and Margaret.
Years before fire.
Elena:
“Antonio says Sebastian is not his, but he will never let boy leave because scandal.”
Margaret:
“Then take both boys.”
Elena:
“I tried.”
Margaret:
“What happened?”
Elena crying.
“Sebastian told Antonio.”
There.
Elena once planned to flee with both Leo and Sebastian.
Sebastian betrayed escape.
Why?
He feared losing Antonio's approval or inheritance.
He was teenager.
Then Antonio punished Elena.
Cycle.
Tape continued.
Margaret:
“If anything happens to you, I keep copy.”
Elena:
“Not at house.”
Margaret:
“I know.”
Clare looked at cassette.
This proved Sebastian knew Elena tried to save him too.
Destroyed his self-justification.
He had portrayed Elena as choosing Leo.
Tape disproved.
That was why he wanted Clare.
He suspected Margaret's copy passed to daughter.
Sebastian wanted last evidence that he had once been loved and had betrayed it.
Psychological and practical.
Because if released, his narrative to loyalists—that Rossi family cast him out—collapsed.
Not enough to topple crime empire maybe.
But identity.
Leo said:
“We don't go to him.”
Clare surprised.
“He asked.”
“Exactly.”
“We give tape to investigators.”
“What about Evelyn?”
Safe now.
Tommy safe.
Archive secure.
No need final showdown.
Then Sebastian forced.
He kidnapped Mrs. Gable.
Of course.
How?
She left estate voluntarily.
A note found:
I started this. I end it.
She went to Rhode Island alone.
Clare furious.
“She learned nothing.”
Leo almost smiled.
“Apparently stubbornness is household tradition.”
Tracker in Mrs. Gable's shoe? Mateo had installed after prior threats.
Good.
Location:
burned Providence estate ruins.
Police coordinated.
Leo insisted go.
Clare too.
At ruins, Sebastian stood beside Mrs. Gable.
No gun visible.
A bonfire.
Boxes of copied archive.
He intended burn perhaps.
“Leo.”
Leo saw brother first time in decades.
Older.
Silver hair.
Same eyes.
Sebastian smiled sadly.
“You look like Antonio.”
Leo answered:
“So do you.”
That hurt.
Clare held cassette.
Sebastian noticed.
“You found it.”
“Yes.”
“Give it.”
“No.”
Mrs. Gable said:
“Sebastian, enough.”
He ignored.
“You think Elena loved you?”
He asked Leo.
Leo did not answer.
Sebastian:
“She chose you every time.”
Clare pressed play on portable recorder.
Elena's voice filled ruins.
Take both boys.
Sebastian went still.
Then:
I tried. Sebastian told Antonio.
His face collapsed.
“Turn it off.”
Clare did not.
Margaret's voice:
He was a child.
Elena:
Yes. And Antonio made him afraid. I still want him with us.
Sebastian screamed:
“TURN IT OFF!”
Leo stepped.
“He loved you too?”
Sebastian looked at him with hate.
“No.”
“Elena did.”
“She pitied me.”
“You don't know.”
“She gave you everything.”
Leo looked around ruins.
“Look what she gave me.”
Empire.
Trauma.
Grief.
Not prize.
Sebastian's hand moved into coat.
Agents shouted.
“Hands!”
Leo did not draw.
Sebastian slowly removed gun.
Clare's heart stopped.
He aimed not Leo.
Himself.
Leo said:
“No.”
Sebastian laughed.
“You care?”
“I don't know.”
Honest.
“But don't make this last thing Antonio taught us.”
Sebastian's hand shook.
“He would call this weakness.”
“Good.”
Long moment.
Then Sebastian lowered gun.
Agents moved.
Arrest.
No blood.
Mrs. Gable cried.
Clare stopped tape.
Sebastian looked at Leo while cuffed.
“She would hate what you became.”
Leo answered:
“Yes.”
Then:
“She might hate what you became too.”
Sebastian nodded once.
First honest agreement between brothers.
And it was over.
Or rather, danger was.
May you like
Consequences were just beginning.
