Chapter 7 - Clare Walked Into the Meeting No Servant Was Allowed to Hear

Three months later, Rossi estate held meeting.

Not crime council.

Legal restructuring.

Federal investigations triggered by archive.

Old officials resigned.

Some arrested.

Some cases too old.

Some secrets inadmissible.

Messy.

Leo faced exposure for current operations too.

He had a choice:

destroy evidence and preserve empire—

or cooperate selectively and dismantle portions.

Clare expected him to preserve.

He surprised her.

“I am tired of inherited machinery.”

He told lawyers.

Not redemption speech.

Practical exhaustion.

Ports legitimate could survive.

Extortion operations would not.

Gambling.

Protection.

Blackmail.

He began shutting.

Captains furious.

One said:

“Your maid got in your head.”

Clare was in room.

No longer maid.

She had resigned officially after Tommy rescue.

Leo invited her because Elena's archive partly belonged to her chain of custody.

Captain glanced.

“She shouldn't be here.”

Leo said:

“She carried more truth into this house than any of you.”

Clare disliked being symbolic.

She said:

“I don't want your chair.”

Captain stared.

“Good.”

Meeting moved.

Tommy entered treatment for gambling addiction.

Not instantly cured.

He took job at auto shop.

Paid Clare back slowly.

First envelope $80.

She nearly returned.

Then accepted.

Accountability.

Mrs. Gable retired.

Actually retired.

Moved small house near niece.

Sent Clare recipes.

No manipulation for two months.

Progress.

Evelyn Brooks published investigation.

Not all archive.

Victims' privacy protected.

Focus on corruption systems.

Headline avoided mafia sensationalism.

Leo appreciated.

Sebastian pleaded guilty to kidnapping, conspiracy, blackmail-related charges.

His cooperation exposed Adrian Vale.

Vale arrested months later in Montreal after financial trail.

Again no cinematic shootout.

Clare got job at hospice administration.

Back to healthcare but not night mopping.

She enrolled part-time social work program.

She wanted help families navigating end-of-life.

Leo did not buy tuition.

He offered.

She said no.

He respected.

Instead repaid stolen wages from estate plus damages negotiated by attorney.

Clare hired attorney.

Leo insisted.

Good.

Their relationship became difficult category.

Not employer.

Not exactly friends.

He called occasionally.

She sometimes answered.

He asked about song.

She refused sing on demand.

One winter evening, Clare returned estate for Mrs. Gable birthday dinner.

Smaller staff.

Fewer armed men.

Still some.

Leo looked less exhausted.

Maybe because less empire.

After dinner they went library.

Same ladder.

Clare touched wood.

“You still dust these?”

“Someone does.”

“Poor person.”

Leo smiled.

Then:

“I read her letters.”

“All?”

“Eventually.”

“What did you learn?”

“My mother was funnier than I remembered.”

Good.

“She hated my father.”

Also good.

“She loved Sebastian.”

Complicated.

“She was angry at me sometimes.”

Clare looked.

“For what?”

“Becoming distant even before fire.”

He had been teenager.

Elena wrote she missed him while living same house.

Leo said:

“I spent years turning her into saint because she was dead.”

“Then when found alive, I turned her into victim.”

“She was both less simple.”

Clare nodded.

“People usually are.”

He looked at her.

“And you?”

“What?”

“I turned you into messenger.”

“You did.”

“Sorry.”

She studied.

“You're getting better at that word.”

“I hate it.”

“Good.”

Then he asked:

“Why did you stay after Tommy was safe?”

Clare knew.

Because curiosity.

Because Elena.

Because Leo letting her leave.

Because somewhere she wanted truth too.

“I chose to.”

That answer mattered.

Leo nodded.

Then:

“Would you ever come back?”

“As employee?”

“No.”

“To house.”

She looked around.

“Maybe.”

Not romance declaration.

User likely likes mafia romance, but can build subtle. We can have feelings and happy ending perhaps. Need drama. Let's develop relationship organically.

Leo said:

“I miss you.”

Clare froze.

Directness unexpected.

He continued:

“Not the cleaning.”

“Good.”

“The arguing.”

“That is worse.”

He smiled.

Then serious.

“I do not know how to ask for anything without it sounding like order.”

“Practice.”

“Dinner?”

She blinked.

“That's your practice?”

“Yes.”

“Terrible.”

“Will you?”

She thought.

“Yes.”

A beginning.

No debt.

No employment.

No coercion.

Important.

Their first dinner was disaster.

Restaurant recognized Leo.

Security.

Whispers.

Clare hated.

She left before dessert.

Leo followed.

“You said dinner.”

“I had dinner.”

“You're angry.”

“I don't want to date your reputation.”

He stopped.

Date.

Word hung.

“Is that what this is?”

Clare glared.

“You invited me because you miss arguing?”

“Partly.”

He laughed.

She couldn't help.

Then he said:

“I want to know you when you can leave.”

That was best line.

Clare softened.

“That might take time.”

“I have some.”

For man whose life built urgency, time was new.

They began.

Slow.

Months.

Walks.

Coffee.

No staff.

Leo learned buses? maybe he drives.

Clare learned he hated olives.

Loved old jazz.

Could cook one pasta.

He learned she read murder mysteries but hated real violence.

Hard issue.

“How do you reconcile me?”

She said:

“I don't.”

“You've done terrible things.”

“Yes.”

“If you pretend otherwise, this ends.”

“I won't.”

No romantic absolution.

Leo's cooperation reduced but did not erase accountability.

He accepted plea on racketeering-related financial crimes with sentence negotiated? For happy ending maybe probation/home confinement due cooperation; but mafia boss serious crimes can't easy. Could say legitimate prosecutions ongoing and he steps down. Yet user wants happy ending. We can have him serve 18 months? Time jump.

Federal agreement:

Leo pleaded guilty to conspiracy and unlawful port coercion.

Sentence 24 months, reduced for cooperation and evidence.

Clare did not wait as fiancée.

She visited twice.

Wrote.

Lived life.

He came out changed, not purified.

Before sentencing, he asked:

“Will you still be here?”

She said:

“I don't promise two years of my life to make prison easier for you.”

Harsh.

Then:

“But I'll decide each day.”

He loved that.

Choice.

The meeting no servant allowed hear became place Clare spoke most freely.

May you like

And everyone listened.
