Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the Past

The elevator doors opened with a soft chime.
Three men in leather jackets stepped out into the quiet corridor, their hands buried deep in their coat pockets. The leader was a scarred lieutenant named Lorenzo—a ruthless enforcer who worked directly for Don Moretti.
Lorenzo scanned the hallway, his eyes halting at the brass sign for Room 604.
Before his hand could clear his jacket pocket, Dominic stepped out of the shadow of the alcove.
Pfft-pfft.
The suppressed weapon coughed twice in rapid succession.
The two men behind Lorenzo collapsed instantly onto the linoleum floor, blood pooling beneath their leather coats.
Lorenzo gasped, spinning around, but Dominic was already upon him.
Dominic slammed his heavy forearm across Lorenzo’s throat, driving the larger man against the wall with sickening force. The suppression gun was pressed directly beneath Lorenzo’s chin.
"You picked the wrong floor, Lorenzo," Dominic whispered, his eyes completely devoid of mercy.
"Gallo..." Lorenzo choked out, his eyes bulging in terror. "Moretti... he knows about the kid... he knows she's your weak spot..."
"She isn't my weak spot," Dominic growled, his grip tightening until Lorenzo's knees buckled. "She's my house. And you just broke into it."
Dominic pulled the trigger.
Lorenzo went limp, slipping to the floor beside his men.
Within thirty seconds, Frank and three estate operatives arrived through the fire stairs, dragging large canvas body bags. With terrifying efficiency, they cleared the three bodies, scrubbed the small bloodstains from the wall, and vanished down the service elevator without making a single loud sound.
Dominic re-holstered his weapon, adjusted his coat, and wiped a small speck of blood from his cuff with his handkerchief.
He took a deep breath, smoothing his hair, before walking over to the door of Room 604.
He knocked softly.
The door opened. Linda stood there, holding a picture book, looking surprised to see her employer standing in a hospital hallway at eight o'clock at night.
"Mr. Gallo?" she asked, her eyes widening. "What... what are you doing here?"
Dominic looked past her to Keo, who was watching him curiously from the bed.
"I was in the neighborhood reviewing hospital donation ledgers," Dominic lied smoothly, his voice completely calm. "I wanted to see if my domestic staff was receiving adequate medical accommodations."

Linda stared at him, her mouth slightly open, before a soft, beautiful smile spread across her face.
"Come in, please," she murmured, stepping aside.
