Chapter 1 – The Promise in the Emergency Room
The ambulance screamed through downtown Philadelphia while Harrison refused to release his sister's hand.
"Stay with me, Khloe."
Blood continued soaking the blanket beneath her.
The paramedic glanced at the fetal monitor.
"We're losing the baby's heartbeat."
Those words shattered whatever calm Harrison had left.
"I don't care what it costs," he barked. "You save both of them."
Twenty minutes later, surgeons rushed Khloe into emergency surgery.
Outside the operating room, Harrison stood perfectly still.
Richard finally arrived.
Not because he cared.
Because Vanessa insisted they "control the situation."
Richard approached cautiously.
"Harry...this was an accident."
Harrison slowly turned.
"What did you just call it?"
Richard swallowed.
"Vanessa lost her balance. Khloe—"
Before he finished, Harrison slammed Richard against the wall hard enough to crack the decorative molding.
"You'll never lie to me again."
Hospital security rushed toward them.
Harrison released Richard voluntarily.
"I don't solve problems with my fists."
He adjusted his tie.
"I solve them in court."
Three hours later...
A surgeon stepped outside.
"Mr. Cole?"
Harrison looked up.
"Your sister survived."
He closed his eyes in relief.
"But..."
The doctor's voice grew quieter.
"We had to perform an emergency C-section."
"And the baby?"
"A little girl."
"She isn't out of danger yet."
Tiny.
Barely four pounds.
Connected to machines inside the NICU.
Harrison stood beside the incubator.
The baby's fingers wrapped around one of his.
"I swear," he whispered.
"No one who did this to your mother will ever hurt either of you again."
Across town...
Vanessa poured herself champagne.
"She'll probably miscarry."
Richard remained silent.
Vanessa smiled.
"Either way, we're finally free."
