Chapter 31: The True Cleanse

The collapse of Helen Rossi’s financial empire was the final domino. With her arrest and the seizure of the remaining millions, the city syndicate was effectively bankrupt. The resources they had used to pay lawyers, buy off officials, and hire enforcers were gone, dissolved into the asset forfeiture funds of two nations.

I returned to the city, arriving at the safe house late at night. When I opened the door, Mara was waiting up for me, a single lamp illuminating the small living room. Leo was asleep in the next room, his breathing a steady, comforting rhythm.

"It’s over," I said, dropping my bag onto the floor. "Rossi is in custody. The money is gone. There’s nothing left for them to fight for."

Mara stood up, walking over to me and wrapping her arms around my neck. I buried my face in her shoulder, the exhaustion of the past five years finally washing over me in a wave of profound relief. We stood there for a long time, just holding each other in the quiet room, letting the reality of our complete safety sink in.

The next day, I submitted my resignation from the police department. I had spent my entire adult life wearing a badge, using the authority of the state to fight a war against the darkness. But the badge had served its purpose. I had used it to protect the people I loved, and now I no longer needed the weight of that metal against my chest to know who I was.

"What are we going to do now?" Mara asked as we packed our bags to leave the safe house for the last time.

"Whatever we want," I smiled, looking at her. "We have a whole world to choose from, and no one is chasing us anymore."
