Chapter 33: The Unbroken Line

As the autumn returned, marking the anniversary of the final hearing, I took a solo walk along the rocky cliffs overlooking our new home. The Atlantic Ocean stretched out before me, a deep, restless blue that seemed to mirror the vastness of the life we had claimed.

I thought about Evan, about Arthur Vance, about Helen Rossi, and about all the individuals who had tried to reduce our existence to a footnote in their criminal enterprises. They were all gone, locked away in concrete cells or buried in forgotten graves, while we were here, standing under a clear sky, living lives of profound purpose and beauty.

Mara joined me on the cliff path, holding Leo by the hand. He walked between us, his small fingers gripping ours with a strength that filled me with immense hope.

"I was thinking about the old apartment today," Mara said, looking out at the horizon. "And I realized something. I don't remember the color of the walls anymore. I don't remember the sound of his voice when he was angry. I only remember the sound of your footsteps coming through the door to save me."

"You saved yourself, Mara," I said, putting my arm around her waist. "You survived the storm. I just showed you where the shore was."

"We survived it together," she corrected gently.

We stood on the edge of the continent, two sisters and a child, bound by a history of fire but defined by a future of light. The line of our lives was unbroken, stretching forward into the unknown with a clarity that was beautiful.
