Chapter 59: A Lesson for Leo

The next morning, before Sarah had to pack her rental car and begin the long journey back to the airport, Maya took Leo down to the harbor for his morning navigation lesson on the sailboat. The weather was pristine, the morning sun casting a brilliant, diamond-like glitter across the calm waters of the bay, while a steady, gentle breeze filled the white canvas sail, pulling them smoothly away from the rocky shoreline.

Maya sat at the back of the boat, managing the heavy wooden rudder with one hand, while Leo stood directly before her, his small hands gripping the smooth pine tiller with an expression of intense, comedic concentration.

"Feel how the water pushes against the rudder, Leo?" Maya instructed him softly, her voice carrying over the gentle splashing of the waves against the hull. "You don't fight the current with brute force; you guide it. You use the wind to turn the water into your ally."

"Like this, Auntie Maya?" Leo asked, his small face tight as he made a minor, precise adjustment to the tiller, keeping the sailboat on a perfectly straight course through the gentle swells.

"Exactly like that, my little captain," Maya beamed with a massive, uncontrollable pride, resting her hand gently over his small fingers. "Now, look out at the point. See that white stone lighthouse standing on the edge of the rocks?"

"I see it!" Leo shouted.

"No matter how the waves try to push us sideways, no matter if the wind shifts to the east, you keep our bow pointed directly at that light," Maya told him, her voice dropping into a rich, metaphorical register that she knew he would carry with him long after he grew into a man. "A good sailor doesn't look at the dark water right next to the boat; he keeps his eyes focused on the light at the destination. That’s how you navigate through any storm."

Leo looked up at her, his brilliant blue eyes wide and clear, completely untainted by the ghosts of the past he had left behind in the city. "Is that how you found this farm, Auntie Maya? By looking at the lighthouse?"

Maya knelt down beside him on the wooden deck, wrapping her strong, calloused arm around his small chest, drawing him close against her side as the boat cut cleanly through the unbroken blue water.

"Yes, my beautiful boy," Maya whispered, her eyes fixed on the distant horizon where the ocean met the sky in a perfect, flawless line. "Even when the storm was so loud I couldn't see my own hands, even when the darkness felt like it would last forever... I kept looking for the light. I kept moving toward the truth. And eventually, the dawn came, and it gave us this horizon."
