Chapter 1 - The Eyes Of A Killer

The absolute silence in the marketplace was suffocating. The towering man in the immaculate black suit stared down at the fearless eight year old girl. Alex Gene, a man who could make politicians sweat with a single glance, stood completely frozen in the middle of the crushed vegetables. His lethal bodyguards tensed behind him. Their hands reached inside their tailored jackets, waiting for the order to remove the tiny nuisance. But Alex raised a single, commanding hand, freezing his men in place. He did not look angry. He looked utterly captivated. He knelt slowly, ignoring the dirt ruining his custom trousers, bringing his face level with Nanya. Before he could speak a single word, a terrified scream ripped through the quiet crowd.
"Nanya! Step away right now!"
Nora burst through the colorful canvas tent, her apron covered in flour and dirt, her face as pale as a ghost. She rushed forward with desperate speed, grabbing her daughter by the shoulders and pulling the girl behind her own trembling body. Nora kept her eyes glued to the wet pavement, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She was praying to every star in the sky that this dangerous stranger would just walk away and forget this ever happened.
"I am so incredibly sorry, sir," Nora whispered, her voice shaking violently. "She is just a child. She does not know what she is saying. Please, forgive her for being disrespectful."
But the heavy silence only stretched longer, thick with an unspoken tension that made the air feel electric. Nora finally forced herself to look up, and all the breath was violently punched from her lungs. Standing before her was not a random wealthy stranger. It was the man she had spent almost nine years running from. Alex Gene. His striking ash brown hair and piercing gaze were exactly as she remembered them from that passionate, reckless summer a decade ago. Back then, she thought he was just a charming corporate executive. She only discovered the bloody truth of his mafia empire after she was already pregnant.
"Nora," Alex breathed out, his deep voice carrying a terrifying mixture of pure shock and suppressed rage. His eyes darted from Nora to the little girl who was currently peeking out from behind her legs. Nanya had the exact same stubborn chin. The exact same fierce posture. And most damning of all, she had his exact same piercing, icy blue eyes.
The math was simple. The realization was deadly.
"Is she mine?" Alex demanded. His voice dropped to a lethal whisper that made the surrounding vendors flinch and take several steps back.
Nora swallowed hard, her maternal instincts screaming at her to run. "I do not know what you are talking about. We need to leave." She scooped Nanya into her arms, ignoring the girl protesting about the ruined peppers, and turned to flee.
But you do not simply walk away from the boss of the New York underworld. Within a fraction of a second, three massive men in black suits blocked her only exit. Alex stood up slowly, his towering frame casting a dark shadow over her.
"You disappeared without a single trace," Alex said, closing the distance between them until Nora could smell his expensive cologne mixed with the faint, metallic scent of danger. "I tore this entire city apart looking for you. And now I find you here, hiding my own flesh and blood from me."

"She is not yours," Nora lied, though her trembling voice betrayed her completely.
Alex reached out, gently but firmly grasping her chin, forcing her to look into his dangerous eyes. "Do not lie to me, Nora. Not ever again. You are coming with me. Both of you."
