Chapter 4 - Confessions In The Penthouse

The Gene compound was a sprawling, impenetrable fortress disguised as a billionaire estate on Long Island. Once inside the lavish penthouse, the adrenaline finally faded, leaving Nora exhausted and emotionally drained. Nanya had fallen fast asleep in the massive master bedroom, completely worn out from her incredibly eventful day.

Nora stood by the floor to ceiling windows, looking out over the dark ocean, her arms wrapped tightly around herself. She heard the soft click of the door closing and knew Alex had entered the room. He walked up behind her, close enough for her to feel the heat radiating from his large frame, but he did not touch her.

"The perimeter is totally secure," Alex said quietly. "My men are sweeping the city. The Volkov family will not exist by tomorrow morning."

Nora shivered at the casual mention of total annihilation. "This is exactly what I ran away from, Alex. The violence. The constant threat of death."

Alex sighed, a heavy, weary sound that made him seem older than his thirty five years. He gently placed his hands on her shoulders, turning her around to face him. The cold, ruthless boss was completely gone. In his place stood a vulnerable, desperate man begging for a second chance.

"I never wanted this life for you," Alex confessed, his thumbs gently stroking her arms. "When we were together, those few months were the only peace I have ever known. When you vanished, I turned completely to the darkness because I had nothing left to lose. But tonight, when I saw you shielding our daughter, something inside me finally snapped. I am done, Nora."

Nora looked up, her breath catching in her throat. "What do you mean you are done?"

"I mean I am walking away," Alex declared firmly. "I have enough legitimate businesses to sustain us for ten lifetimes. I will hand the syndicate over to my underboss. I am dismantling the violent operations. I want to be a father to Nanya. And I want to be the man you deserve, if you will let me."

Tears spilled down Nora's cheeks. She had dreamed of hearing those exact words for nine agonizing years. She reached up, resting her hands against his broad chest, feeling the steady, strong beat of his heart. "Can you really just walk away? Will they let you?"

Alex smiled, a dangerous, arrogant smirk that made Nora's stomach do nervous flips. "I am the boss, Nora. They do exactly what I tell them to do. And right now, my only priority is making sure my girls never have to run again." He leaned down, pressing his forehead against hers. "Please stop running from me. Let me protect you. Let me love you."

Nora closed her eyes, finally surrendering the heavy burden she had carried alone for so long. "Okay," she whispered, leaning into his embrace. "I am done running."
