Chapter 1 - The Shadow on the Screen

Dr. Sutton’s voice had dropped an octave, the clinical detachment in her tone replaced by something cold and warning.
David didn’t move. He stood beside the examination table with his arms crossed, a self-satisfied smirk plastered across his face. He looked down at me like I was a criminal finally cornered by the police.
“Go ahead, Doctor,” David said, gesturing toward the monitor with a flick of his wrist. “Tell her. Tell us how a woman who claims to be faithful is carrying a child conceived two months after a confirmed procedure.”
Peyton stepped closer, leaning over my shoulder with an expression of pure, toxic glee. She wore a tailored white coat that looked entirely out of place in an OB-GYN office, her perfume smelling of expensive jasmine and malice. “Just accept it, Lauren,” she purred. “You got caught. Dragging this out only makes you look more pathetic.”
Dr. Sutton didn't look at Peyton. She didn't look at David. She kept her eyes locked on the ultrasound screen, her finger gently adjusting the focus knob on the machine.
“Mr. Vance,” Dr. Sutton said again, her voice ringing clear in the small, silent room. “I am not looking at a ten-week gestation.”
David’s smug expression faltered for a fraction of a second. “What are you talking about? She missed her period six weeks ago, and we tracked the timeline—we haven't slept together in two months, which is exactly why she cheated!”
“Look at the monitor,” Dr. Sutton interrupted, pointing a gloved finger at a bright white cluster on the screen. “This fetus measures precisely eighteen weeks old. Furthermore, Mr. Vance... this is not a singleton pregnancy.”
The room went absolute zero.
My breath caught in my throat. I stared at the screen, my eyes tracing the white shapes the doctor was pointing to.
“Twins?” I whispered, my voice trembling.
“Not twins, Mrs. Vance,” Dr. Sutton said softly. She moved the wand slightly to the left, revealing a distinct, second measurement. “Triplets. Three healthy, perfectly developing fetuses at eighteen weeks gestation.”
Eighteen weeks.
My mind raced backward through the calendar, calculating with the frantic precision of a terrified woman. Eighteen weeks ago... was four and a half months ago.
It was right around our fifth wedding anniversary.
It was months before David ever stepped foot in a urology clinic to get a secret vasectomy.
David staggered back a half-step, his face turning the color of wet cement. The smug color vanished from his cheeks, leaving him looking hollow and entirely unhinged. “No. That’s impossible. She’s lying. The dates are wrong!”
“The biological timeline of an ultrasound does not lie, Mr. Vance,” Dr. Sutton said, her eyes flashing with quiet fury. “Your wife has been pregnant with your children for over four months. Which means two months ago, when you allegedly had a vasectomy to frame her for infidelity... she was already carrying your triplets.”

Peyton’s smirk vanished entirely. Her jaw dropped. She looked at David, her voice rising in panic. “David? What is she talking about? You told me you were sterile months ago! You told me she was sleeping around!”
David didn't answer her. He was staring at the monitor, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. The trap he had so carefully engineered to destroy me—the fake medical timeline, the stolen money, the public humiliation—had just violently snapped shut around his own neck.
