Chapter 2 - The House of Cards

“Let me see that chart!” David lunged forward, his hands darting toward the medical tablet in Dr. Sutton’s hands.

Before he could touch it, the examination room door swung open. Two heavy-set security guards, alerted by the front desk due to the escalating shouting, stepped into the room. They flanked David immediately, their massive arms crossing over their chests.

“Sir, you need to step back from the patient,” the lead guard ordered, his voice deep and commanding.

David ignored him, pointing a shaking finger at me. “She engineered this! It’s a conspiracy! The clinic is faking the scans!” He turned desperately to Peyton. “You believe me, right? We checked the dates! She’s a liar!”

Peyton shrank back against the wall, her face twisting in disgust and panic. “Don’t touch me, David. You told me she was barren. You told me you were completely clear. You used me to launder your assets out of your marriage, and now you’re telling me you’re having triplets with your wife? You lied to me!”

“I didn't mean—”

“Get him out of my sight,” Dr. Sutton commanded the guards, her voice cutting through the shouting. “And take his mistress with him. This is a medical facility, not a courtroom for sociopaths.”

The guards didn't hesitate. They grabbed David by his designer suit jacket and physically hauled him backward toward the door. David kicked and thrashed, screaming my name, his face purple with rage and humiliation. Peyton grabbed her designer handbag and bolted out the door behind them, completely abandoning the man who had promised her half my life.

The heavy door clicked shut.

Silence rushed back into the room, thick, heavy, and profound.

I sat frozen on the examination table, my hand resting over my stomach. Three babies. Three innocent lives growing inside me while their father tried to throw me out onto the street with nothing.

Dr. Sutton set her tablet down on the counter. She pulled off her latex gloves and tossed them into the trash, then walked over to the bed. She reached out and gently squeezed my trembling hand.

“Are you alright, Lauren?” she asked softly.

“I... I don't know,” I breathed, a stray tear finally escaping my eye and tracking down my cheek. “I feel like I’m losing my mind. How did he not know? How could he forget the timeline?”

“Because narcissistic men like David only see what serves their narrative,” Dr. Sutton said, her eyes fierce with support. “He wanted an excuse to leave you for his mistress without paying a fair divorce settlement. He manufactured a crisis, altered his medical narrative, and convinced himself it was true. But biology cannot be bribed, and it cannot be lied to.”

She handed me a stack of tissues.

“Now,” Dr. Sutton smiled, a brilliant, determined expression lighting up her face. “Let’s print out these scans. Because your husband just signed a waiver of assets based on a fraudulent timeline—and I happen to know a very aggressive family law attorney who is going to have a field day with this.”
