Chapter 4 - The Downfall of David Vance

The execution was swift, brutal, and entirely merciless.
Three days after our ultrasound confrontation, David Vance was sitting in a high-level executive meeting at his tech firm when two federal marshals walked into the boardroom and slapped federal and civil asset-freeze notices onto his desk.
Within forty-eight hours, the dominoes of his carefully crafted life collapsed.
Because of the emergency motion Marcus filed, the family court judge reviewed Dr. Sutton’s certified ultrasound records alongside David’s signed affidavits regarding his “two-month vasectomy.” The judge didn't just invalidate the asset waiver David had tried to force on me; he declared it a malicious, fraudulent act of coercion designed to defraud a pregnant spouse.
David’s personal bank accounts were instantly frozen. His luxury sports car was repossessed. His startup shares were placed into a court-supervised receivership managed entirely by my legal team.
And Peyton?
Peyton didn't stick around for the sinking ship. The moment David’s accounts were frozen and he was fired by his own board of directors for bringing corporate liability onto the firm, she packed her bags, emptied whatever cash she could steal from his apartment, and blocked his number. The great love affair engineered in secret offices had lasted exactly as long as David’s credit cards worked.
The climax arrived on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.
I was sitting in my living room—the very house David had tried to cheat me out of—drinking chamomile tea when the front doorbell rang.
I opened the door.
Standing on the porch was David.
He looked like a man who had been dragged through a hurricane. His hair was unwashed, his expensive suit wrinkled and stained, and his eyes hollow and bloodshot. The arrogant tech founder who had sneered at me in the clinic was entirely gone.
“Lauren,” he choked out, his voice cracking pathetically. “Please. You have to call Marcus. You have to call the court.”
I didn't invite him in. I stood firmly in the doorway, my hand resting gently over my growing belly.
“What do you want, David?” I asked, my voice devoid of any emotion.
“They locked me out of my apartment. My cards are declined. The board voted to oust me yesterday morning,” he sobbed, his hands trembling as he reached out toward me. “Peyton took everything she could find and left me. I have nothing, Lauren. I’m ruined.”
“You did this to yourself,” I replied quietly. “You wanted to manufacture a lie to destroy me. You wanted to punish me for a crime I never committed. You just didn't realize the truth has a way of catching up to you.”
“We’re married!” he cried desperately. “We’re having a family! Think of the babies!”
“I am thinking of the babies,” I said, my eyes hardening into steel. “That is why every single cent you earned, every share you held, and every asset you tried to hide is now legally transferred into the triplet trust fund managed by my attorneys. You don't get to share in their lives, David. You tried to throw us away like trash. Now you get to live in the dumpster you built.”
I stepped back and pulled the heavy oak door toward me.
“Don't call my phone. Don't come to this house. My lawyers will handle the divorce.”
“Lauren, wait! Please!”
