Chapter 5 - The Shadow Behind the Throne

For two days, I remained inside Dr. Chen's hidden facility.

Mateo kept watch at the door while Elena and Lily stayed in the adjacent room.

During those forty-eight hours, I learned the full scope of the betrayal that had stripped four years of happiness from my life.

Marcus and Isabella had orchestrated Elena's disappearance to prevent her from inheriting her father's massive shipping empire—an empire that merged with mine upon our marriage.

When my search for Elena refused to slow down, Marcus arranged the ambush outside the Midtown restaurant.

They didn't want to kill me.

They wanted me blind. Vulnerable. Broken.

A puppet boss who signed financial documents Isabella placed in front of him, while Marcus expanded their illegal arms trade through my shipping docks.

On Thursday morning, Dr. Chen stepped into my room with a pair of surgical scissors.

"It's time, Dominic," Henry said quietly.

He carefully snipped the thread holding the heavy white gauze in place.

Layer after layer came off.

The room was kept completely dark, illuminated only by a faint yellow nightlight in the corner.

"Open your eyes slowly," Henry instructed.

I blinked.

At first, there was only a blurry, gray fog. My heart raced with a sudden wave of terror—what if it hadn't worked?

Then, the fog parted.

Shapes materialized.

The metallic frame of the medical lamp. The blue wallpaper. Dr. Chen’s glasses reflecting the dim light.

And then I saw them.

Elena was standing near the doorway, clutching her hands against her chest, tears shining on her pale, beautiful face.

Beside her, holding her dress, was Lily. She had my dark hair, my square jaw, and big, intelligent brown eyes that stared at me with pure wonder.

I stood up from the bed, my sight sharp, clear, and focused.

I knelt before my daughter.

Lily stepped forward, her tiny hand reaching out to touch my cheek—exactly as she had done in Central Park.

"Look, Mama," Lily whispered, her face lighting up with a radiant smile. "I told you. His eyes were just sleeping."

Tears blurred my vision, but for the first time in six months, they were tears of profound joy.

"You healed me, Lily," I whispered, pulling her into my arms and kissing her forehead. "You brought me back to the light."

I looked up at Elena, taking her hand and bringing her into our embrace.

Then I looked at Mateo, who stood by the door, holding my dark suit jacket and my signet ring.

"Isabella thinks the wedding is still happening in three days," Mateo said coldly.

I stood up, buttoning my jacket, my eyes turning to ice.

"Let her prepare for a wedding," I said softly. "Because she is about to attend a execution of her dreams."
