Chapter 9 - The Rescue at Blackwood Estate

By 6:00 a.m., the sun began to break over the New York skyline, casting orange and pink light across the harbor.
Isabella was standing in the grand foyer of my mountain estate, wearing her white lace wedding gown, admiring herself in the full-length mirror.
She held a bouquet of white roses.
The front doors swung open.
Isabella turned, expecting her bridesmaids or the limousine driver.
Instead, I walked in.
I was flanked by Mateo and four armed guards.
Isabella’s smile faded slightly when she saw I wasn't using my cane, but she quickly forced a sweet expression.
"Dominic? What are you doing? It's bad luck for the groom to see the bride before—"
She stopped.
Because I was looking directly into her eyes.
Not at her chin. Not at her voice.
Directly into her dark, manipulative eyes.
"Your dress is white, Isabella," I said smoothly, stepping into the foyer. "A color reserved for purity. How ironic."
Isabella backed away, her face turning chalk white. The bouquet of roses slipped from her fingers, scattering petals across the marble floor.
"You... you can see," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
"I’ve been able to see for three days," I told her, my voice echoing off the high ceilings. "I saw the Panama transfer papers. I saw the medical records you bought. And I heard every word you said in the conservatory last night."
"Dominic, please!" She fell to her knees, reaching for the hem of my trousers, her tears ruining her expensive makeup. "I loved you! I did it because I loved you! Elena was going to take you away from me!"
"You didn't love me," I said, stepping back so her hand caught only empty air. "You loved the crown. And now it's gone."
The side doors opened, and two federal agents stepped into the foyer, holding an arrest warrant for high treason, attempted murder, and illegal weapons trafficking.
Marcus had already confessed to everything in exchange for a reduced sentence.
As the agents slapped steel handcuffs onto Isabella’s wrists and dragged her away in her white wedding dress, she screamed my name until the doors slammed shut.
The house fell silent.

I turned to Mateo.
"Bring them home," I said.
