Chapter 5 - The Shadow Investor

By 2:00 PM, Elias's private helicopter landed on the rooftop helipad of the Vance Tower in downtown Manhattan.
I walked beside Elias, flanked by Marcus and a team of six private security guards. I wore a tailored ivory suit, my hair styled in elegant waves, walking with a head-high confidence I hadn't known I possessed.
The days of the weak, terrified woman beneath the overpass were over. I was fighting for my daughters' future, and I had the most powerful man in New York standing by my side.
We entered the grand board room on the top floor, where twenty senior board members and federal investigators from the Securities and Exchange Commission were seated around a massive glass table.
Harrison Vane was sitting at the far end, looking arrogant and relaxed, flanked by his legal team.
When Vane saw me walk into the room beside Elias, his smug expression wavered for a fraction of a second.
"Elias," Vane sneered, leaning back in his leather chair. "I see you brought your... guest. Is she here to confess to her financial crimes?"
Elias pulled out a chair for me at the head of the table, right opposite Vane, before taking his seat beside me.
"Ava isn't here to confess, Vane," Elias said, his voice echoing through the silent room like a thunderclap. "She's here to exercise her rights as the majority shareholder of Apex Global Holdings."
Vane chuckled nervously. "Apex Global? That's a shell firm. It has nothing to do with this meeting."
I pulled a heavy silver flash drive from my leather handbag and set it directly onto the digital conference reader in the middle of the table.
"It has everything to do with this meeting, Mr. Vane," I said, my voice clear, steady, and filled with unwavering conviction.
The wall monitors flashed to life, displaying thousands of encrypted banking transfers linking Harrison Vane's primary real estate firm to offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands—all registered under Apex Global Holdings.
"For three years, my ex-husband forced me to sign corporate filings under duress," I explained to the federal investigators seated at the table. "I didn't know what they were then. But as the sole legal director of Apex Global, I have officially unlocked all digital ledgers and handed them over to the SEC this morning."
The federal lead investigator stood up immediately, reviewing the glowing red transaction lines on the screen.
"These records show twenty-four million dollars in illegal bribery payments to port authority officials," the investigator declared, looking coldly at Vane. "Signed by Harrison Vane."
Vane's face turned completely white. He scrambled to his feet, knocking his chair over backward.

"This is a lie!" Vane roared, pointing a trembling finger at me. "She's lying! She's just a street peasant Elias picked up to frame me!"
"The signatures on those wire transfers are yours, Vane," Elias said, standing up slowly, his towering presence commanding the room. "Your stock has dropped forty percent in the last ten minutes. Security is waiting outside to escort you from the building."
