CHAPTER 11— THE SIGNATURE
Harrison stood and walked away from the laptop.
Khloe followed him into the empty courthouse hallway.
“You said you didn’t sign the payment.”
“I didn’t remember.”
“What does that mean?”
Harrison pressed both hands against the wall.
“I handled dozens of documents for Dad. He would place folders on my desk and tell me where to sign.”
“You were an attorney.”
“I was twenty-six. I trusted him.”
Khloe heard the shame in his voice.
“Trusting our father does not make you a criminal.”
“It might make me responsible.”
They returned to the recording.
Daniel explained that the payment to Harrison’s firm was not a bribe.
It was a legal retainer intended to create an independent evidence archive.
Harrison had signed the transfer, but Daniel never told him the true purpose.
Thomas later altered the accounting records to make the payment appear illegal.
Daniel had hidden the original authorization inside the courthouse compartment.
The document proved Harrison’s innocence.
But it also exposed Daniel’s deception.
Their father had used his son’s signature without informed consent.
Harrison stared at the page.
“He protected you by risking me.”
Khloe did not know how to answer.
For years, she had idealized Daniel Cole as the father who tried to save her.
Now she saw the damage created by his silence.
He had loved his children.
But love without truth had nearly destroyed both of them.
Emma remained focused on the final portion of the recording.
Daniel identified three judges, two executives and a state senator who had helped Thomas hide fraudulent property transactions.
He also revealed that Meridian held controlling interests in several companies Thomas believed he owned completely.
Those shares could strip Thomas of his wealth overnight.
“That’s why he wants the trust,” Emma said.
“He isn’t protecting a company. He’s protecting his entire empire.”
Federal prosecutors prepared warrants.
Before they could execute them, Thomas disappeared.
His plane remained inside its private hangar.
His accounts were frozen.
His passport had not been used.
He had simply vanished.
Then Khloe received an official court notice.
Thomas had filed a lawsuit through his attorneys.
He claimed the Meridian agreement was invalid because Daniel had concealed Emma’s identity from other beneficiaries.
If Thomas won, the court could freeze all Meridian properties and Cole Urban Development shares during years of litigation.
The company would lose access to crucial financing.
Thousands of jobs could disappear.
Emma was the key witness.
She would need to testify that she knowingly accepted temporary control of Meridian without claiming personal ownership.
“I’ll testify,” she said.
The hearing was scheduled for Monday.
On Sunday night, Emma left the secure residence to meet a federal agent.
She never arrived.
Her car was found in a parking garage.
There were no signs of violence.
Security footage showed Emma entering a black sedan willingly.
The driver was Thomas Crane.
On Monday morning, Khloe entered the courtroom without her witness.
Thomas’s attorneys were already seated.
Then the rear doors opened.
Emma walked inside beside Thomas.
She avoided Khloe’s eyes.
