CHAPTER 8 — THE PRICE OF SILENCE

Daniel Cole’s death certificate listed cardiac failure.

He had collapsed in his office late one evening and died before the ambulance arrived.

Khloe had never questioned it.

Her father had suffered from high blood pressure. His doctor had warned him to reduce stress.

At the time, his death had seemed tragic but understandable.

Now Harrison revealed that Richard had sent him a message from prison.

He claimed Thomas Crane had arranged Daniel’s death.

“Why would Richard tell you this now?” Khloe asked.

“He wants his sentence reduced.”

“So he’s trading another lie for freedom.”

“Possibly.”

“Did he provide evidence?”

Harrison removed a small audio recorder from his desk.

During their meeting, Richard described a dinner between Thomas and Daniel on the evening Daniel died.

According to Richard, Thomas learned that Daniel planned to expose fraudulent land acquisitions and remove him from every Cole trust transaction.

Thomas allegedly placed something in Daniel’s drink.

Richard’s voice played through the recorder.

Thomas told me Daniel had suffered a heart attack. Years later, he admitted the heart attack needed help.

Khloe listened without moving.

“Richard knew this for years?”

“Yes.”

“And said nothing?”

“He used it to control Thomas.”

Emma stood near the window.

“My mother believed Daniel was murdered.”

Everyone turned toward her.

“She tried to warn him,” Emma continued. “The night before he died, he called her and said he had found proof that Thomas was moving land through fraudulent subsidiaries.”

“Why didn’t your mother go to the police?” Harrison demanded.

“She did. The detective assigned to the case died six months later.”

One of the names on Emma’s list.

Khloe felt as though the room were shrinking.

Thomas had not simply helped Richard steal a company.

He had built an entire system around silence.

“Where is your mother now?” Khloe asked.

“I don’t know.”

“Then we find her.”

Emma’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen and turned pale.

The caller identification displayed Rebecca Shaw.

Emma answered immediately.

“Mom?”

For several seconds, no one spoke.

Then a man’s voice came through the speaker.

“Return the ledger.”

Emma gripped the phone.

“Let me speak to her.”

“You will receive proof that she is alive after you deliver it.”

“Where?”

“Instructions will follow.”

The call ended.

Harrison contacted federal authorities, but the number had been routed through multiple international servers.

Emma blamed herself.

Khloe refused to let her.

“They want us divided,” she said. “That means they’re afraid of what happens if we stay together.”

Khloe hired an independent law firm and moved Hope to a secure residence known only to Harrison, Lena and two federal agents.

Then she announced a public audit of Meridian Land Holdings.

Thomas responded within hours.

He filed an emergency board motion declaring Khloe temporarily unfit to serve as chief executive.

His petition described her as emotionally unstable, traumatized by the courthouse attack and manipulated by an alleged illegitimate heir.

Eight board members supported him.

Khloe needed only one more vote to block the motion.

That vote belonged to Chief Financial Officer Martin Ellis.

Martin had worked for the company for twenty-seven years.

Khloe trusted him.

Before the board meeting, Martin requested a private conversation.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

“For what?”

He slid a resignation letter across her desk.

Thomas had threatened Martin’s family.

Martin had agreed to vote against Khloe and then disappear.

“I couldn’t do it,” he said. “But I cannot stay.”

“Tell the investigators everything.”

“I will.”

Martin stood and headed toward the door.

Before leaving, he turned back.

“Thomas isn’t trying to remove you because of Meridian.”

“Then why?”

“He believes your father placed something else inside the trust.”

“What?”

Martin’s eyes filled with fear.

“The controlling interest in every company Thomas owns.”

That night, Martin Ellis never reached his home.

His car was found abandoned beside the Delaware River.

There was blood on the driver’s seat.

And Khloe’s name had been written across the windshield.
