CHAPTER 12— THE BETRAYAL
Emma took the witness stand.
Khloe sat beside her new attorney, Rachel Monroe, while Harrison watched from the row behind them.
Thomas remained calm.
The judge asked Emma whether she understood the consequences of lying under oath.
“Yes,” Emma answered.
Thomas’s attorney approached.
“Ms. Cole, did Daniel Cole promise you ownership of Meridian Land Holdings?”
Emma paused.
“Yes.”
Khloe felt the room tilt.
“Did Khloe Cole pressure you to surrender that ownership?”
“Yes.”
“Did she threaten to expose private information about your mother?”
“Yes.”
Each answer struck harder than the last.
Thomas’s attorneys produced a signed declaration.
Emma claimed Khloe had manipulated her after discovering she was Daniel’s daughter.
Reporters filled the courtroom.
By the end of the day, Khloe would once again be portrayed as a powerful woman abusing someone weaker.
Rachel leaned toward her.
“She’s lying.”
“I know.”
“How?”
“Because she never calls him Daniel.”
“What?”
“She always says our father or Dad.”
During cross-examination, Rachel asked Emma about her mother.
Emma’s hands tightened.
“My mother has a heart condition,” she said. “She needs medication every four hours.”
Harrison looked at Lena.
Rebecca’s medical records listed no heart condition.
Emma was sending them a message.
Four hours.
Medication.
Thomas was holding Rebecca somewhere that required regular treatment.
Rachel continued.
“Do you fear that your mother will suffer if you tell the truth?”
Thomas’s attorney objected.
The judge sustained it.
Emma looked directly at Khloe for the first time.
“I’m doing what any daughter would do.”
Khloe understood.
Emma had entered the car willingly because Thomas had shown proof that Rebecca was alive.
She was lying to save her mother.
The judge issued a temporary order freezing the Meridian assets.
Thomas had won the first round.
Outside the courtroom, reporters surrounded Khloe.
She did not answer their questions.
Inside a secure vehicle, Lena analyzed the livestream of Emma’s testimony.
“Her mention of medication was deliberate,” Lena said.
“And the four-hour schedule?” Harrison asked.
“Possibly dialysis, infusions or oxygen treatment.”
Khloe remembered the rural medical facility.
The bed where Rebecca had scratched her message had been connected to portable oxygen equipment.
Lena searched Thomas’s corporate holdings for private clinics, rehabilitation centers and medical warehouses.
There were nineteen.
Only one received emergency oxygen deliveries every four hours.
An abandoned research hospital outside Harrisburg.
Federal agents raided the property that night.
They found Rebecca locked inside a third-floor room.
She was weak but alive.
Thomas had moved most of his men after the hearing, believing the location no longer mattered.
Rebecca identified him as the man who ordered Daniel’s death.
She also provided a recorded conversation in which Thomas threatened Emma.
The next morning, Emma returned to court and recanted her testimony.
She explained the coercion.
Thomas’s attorneys demanded that her statements be excluded.
Before the judge could rule, a court officer whispered something to the prosecutor.
Thomas Crane had been spotted near the Canadian border.
Authorities surrounded the private lodge where he was hiding.
But when they entered, Thomas was gone.
On the table, they found a photograph of Hope.
A red circle had been drawn around the little girl’s face.
