CHAPTER 14 — THE EMPTY ROOM

Khloe did not remember leaving the prison.
She remembered Harrison’s voice.
She remembered the empty child’s bed at the safe house.
She remembered one pink sock lying beside the open back door.
The federal agent assigned to the property had been found unconscious but alive.
Security footage showed a maintenance vehicle entering through the service gate.
The driver had used legitimate federal credentials.
Someone inside the investigation had helped Thomas.
Lena identified the compromised official within two hours.
Deputy Marshal Eric Sloan had once worked private security for Thomas’s companies.
He had hidden the connection.
Sloan disappeared after the abduction.
A message arrived on Khloe’s phone.
Bring the original Meridian trust agreement to the Montgomery County Courthouse at midnight.
Come alone.
Khloe stared at the words.
The courthouse steps.
The place where Vanessa pushed her.
The place where Richard watched her fall.
Thomas had chosen it deliberately.
Harrison refused to let her go alone.
“I’m not asking permission,” Khloe said.
“He will kill you.”
“He has my daughter.”
“And he wants you emotional.”
“I am emotional.”
She looked directly at her brother.
“But I’m not powerless.”
The original agreement remained sealed inside a federal evidence vault.
Rachel prepared a convincing duplicate containing a tracking device and microscopic identification markers.
Agents surrounded the courthouse in unmarked vehicles.
At eleven fifty-eight, Khloe approached the steps carrying the leather folder.
The night was cold.
For one terrifying moment, she saw herself pregnant again, lying at the bottom of the stairs while Richard calculated whether saving her would benefit him.
Then a small voice came through a speaker.
“Mommy?”
Khloe stopped.
Hope sounded frightened.
“I’m here, baby.”
Thomas’s voice followed.
“Place the folder on the sixth step.”
“Let me see her.”
“Do it.”
Khloe placed the folder down.
A man wearing a black hood emerged from an alley and collected it.
He opened the folder and checked the first page.
Then he spoke into a radio.
“It’s real.”
Khloe waited.
“Where is my daughter?”
The courthouse lights suddenly went dark.
A vehicle accelerated from the side street.
Federal agents moved too late.
The black SUV disappeared through a construction barrier.
The tracking device inside the folder stopped transmitting almost immediately.
Thomas had anticipated it.
Khloe’s phone rang.
Hope was crying in the background.
“You brought a copy,” Thomas said.
“You were never going to release her.”
“That depends on what you do next.”
“What do you want?”
“Your resignation. Control of Cole Urban Development. A public declaration that Emma forged the Meridian agreement.”
“You will still have no legal authority.”
“I will after Richard names me Hope’s financial guardian.”
“He can’t do that.”
“He already has.”
Thomas sent her a photograph.
Richard’s signature appeared beneath a petition nominating Thomas Crane as Hope’s emergency financial representative.
The document had been filed that morning.
Thomas continued.
“You have until noon tomorrow to surrender the company.”
The call ended.
Harrison approached Khloe slowly.
She showed him the petition.
Her hands were no longer shaking.
For the first time since Hope disappeared, Khloe’s fear became something colder.
Something focused.
“Richard wants to be seen as her father?” she said.
Harrison studied her expression.
“What are you thinking?”
“I’m going to give him the chance.”
“To do what?”
“To choose between being Hope’s father and being Thomas Crane’s final accomplice.”
Khloe returned to the prison before sunrise.
Richard entered the visitation room expecting gratitude.
Instead, she placed a photograph of Hope against the glass.
It showed their daughter asleep beneath a hospital blanket shortly after her birth.
“You never held her,” Khloe said.
Richard looked away.
“You said the doctors wouldn’t allow it.”
“They would have. You left before they asked.”
“I was being investigated.”
“You were afraid the cameras would capture you caring about someone other than yourself.”
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“What do you want?”
“Thomas kidnapped her.”
“I know.”
“You knew?”
“He sent proof.”
“And you still signed the petition?”
“He promised Hope would be released after the transfer.”
Khloe laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“You still believe men like you keep promises.”
Richard moved closer to the glass.
“I was trying to save her.”
“No. You were trying to purchase a heroic ending.”
She placed a document against the window.
It was a formal declaration acknowledging that Richard had knowingly conspired with Thomas.
If signed, it would destroy any chance of a reduced sentence.
It would also revoke his petition and provide investigators access to the communication system Thomas used.
“Sign it,” Khloe said.
Richard read the first page.
“I’ll spend the rest of my life in prison.”
“You should have thought about that before you helped him take our daughter.”
“I did not take her.”
“You opened the door.”
Richard stared at Hope’s photograph.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Then he requested a pen.
He signed every page.
Investigators accessed the hidden messages between Richard and Thomas.
Thomas had used a coded legal portal connected to a private server.
Lena traced the server to a decommissioned municipal building owned by Meridian.
An old children’s hospital.
Khloe remembered the property from the original map.
It was scheduled for demolition.
Federal teams surrounded the building.
Thermal imaging detected four people inside.
Thomas.
Deputy Marshal Sloan.
One unidentified guard.
And a child.
Khloe remained inside the command vehicle while the tactical unit entered.
Gunfire echoed through the building.
One guard surrendered.
Sloan was arrested while attempting to escape through a service tunnel.
Agents found a room filled with legal documents, company records and photographs of Khloe’s family.
They did not find Thomas or Hope.
A tunnel beneath the hospital led to an adjacent construction site.
Thomas had escaped minutes before the raid.
Inside the room where Hope had been held, agents found her stuffed rabbit.
A small voice recorder had been tied around its neck.
Khloe pressed play.
Hope’s voice whispered through the speaker.
“Mommy, the bad man says we’re going to the place with the big water.”
In the background, a bell sounded three times.
Harrison listened again.
Then his eyes widened.
“The big water isn’t a lake.”
“What is it?”
“The Bellweather Reservoir.”
Lena pulled up a map.
A massive underground water facility stood beneath land controlled by Meridian.
The property contained service tunnels, maintenance buildings and an abandoned pumping station.
Khloe looked toward the dark horizon.
A storm was approaching.
May you like
According to the facility report, heavy rain would trigger automatic floodgates within two hours.
If Hope was inside the lower pumping station when those gates opened, the entire structure would fill with water.
