Chapter 1 - The Venomous Diamond

The sterile white lights of the emergency room blinded me as I struggled to open my eyes. My entire body felt like it was submerged in wet concrete. Every breath I took required a monumental effort, and a strange, metallic taste coated the back of my tongue. The frantic beeping of a heart monitor echoed in the small room, matching the chaotic rhythm in my chest.

Dominic Rossi was standing near the door, his towering frame casting a long shadow across the linoleum floor. He had discarded his custom tailored tuxedo jacket hours ago. His crisp white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, and a dark, terrifying intensity completely consumed his usually composed features. Next to him stood Dr. Aris, the chief of emergency medicine, holding a thick plastic evidence bag and a stack of toxicology reports.

"Mr. Rossi," Dr. Aris said, his voice dropping to a grave whisper that still managed to carry across the quiet room. "The laceration on Skylar cheek is superficial. It will heal with minimal scarring. But the cut itself was never the true danger. We ran a full spectrum chemical analysis on her blood after she went into anaphylactic shock."

Dominic stepped closer to the doctor, his jaw locked tight. "Explain it to me. Right now."

"There is a highly concentrated synthetic neurotoxin in her bloodstream," Dr. Aris explained, holding up the evidence bag. Inside rested the massive platinum engagement ring Bianca Moretti had worn just hours earlier. "The central diamond on this ring was elevated on a hollowed out setting. Beneath the stone was a microscopic pressure valve connected to a tiny reservoir. When the ring struck Skylar face with enough force, the skin broke, and the valve released the toxin directly into her open wound."

I lay frozen on the hospital bed, my mind racing to comprehend the horror of his words. Bianca had not just slapped me out of spite. She had been wearing a weapon.

"What kind of toxin?" Dominic demanded, his voice turning into pure ice.

"A derivative of a very rare paralytic agent," Dr. Aris answered, looking at the charts. "It is designed to mimic the exact symptoms of a massive, fatal stroke. If that ring had struck your mother, given her advanced age and fragile cardiovascular system, her heart would have stopped within ten minutes. The medical examiner would have likely ruled it natural causes due to her early dementia and declining health. It is an assassin tool, Mr. Rossi. Pure and simple."

The air in the room grew incredibly heavy. Dominic closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, the horrifying reality settling over him. Bianca had planned to murder Carmela in the middle of a crowded gala, surrounded by hundreds of high society guests, and make it look like a tragic medical emergency.

"Skylar survived because of her age and her body mass," Dr. Aris continued, offering me a sympathetic glance. "Her system was strong enough to fight off the immediate cardiac arrest, although it sent her into a severe allergic reaction that closed her airway. If she had not received oxygen and epinephrine in the ambulance, she would not be here right now."

Dominic turned his head slowly, his dark eyes locking onto mine. The cold, ruthless billionaire persona he wore for the corporate world completely shattered. He walked to the edge of my bed, pulling up a plastic chair and sitting down heavily. He reached out, his large, warm hand gently wrapping around my trembling fingers.

"You saved my mother," Dominic whispered, his voice thick with an emotion I had never heard from him before. "You threw yourself in front of a monster to protect her. You took a lethal dose of poison meant for my family."

"Carmela is always kind to me," I rasped, my throat still burning from the intubation tube they had removed earlier. "She was terrified, Dominic. Bianca cornered her in the conservatory. She told your mother she was a liability."

Dominic gripped my hand tighter, his knuckles turning white. "Bianca Moretti is going to wish she had never been born."

Before I could say another word, the heavy double doors of the emergency department swung open. Two uniformed police officers stepped inside, accompanied by a lead detective holding a notepad. They needed a statement, and they needed to secure the venomous ring as attempted murder evidence.

As the detective began asking me questions about the sequence of events in the conservatory, Dominic pulled out his phone. He did not dial the police. He dialed his private security chief.

"Lock down the estate," Dominic ordered into the phone, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "No one leaves. Detain Bianca Moretti in the west wing holding room. Do not let her father or her lawyers anywhere near her. If she tries to run, break her legs."
