Chapter 2 - THE HOSPITAL DIDN’T CALL IT FOOD POISONING

Noah and I were transported separately.

I hated that.

I kept asking where he was.

The paramedic repeated:

“He’s conscious. He’s being taken to the same hospital.”

I clung to that.

At the emergency department, doctors treated us based on symptoms while toxicology testing began.

I told them everything I had heard.

Daniel’s phone call.

His words.

The food.

Our sudden collapse.

The missing phones.

The sample in the freezer bag.

The physician asked:

“Did your husband eat the same meal?”

“No.”

“What did he say?”

“He said he wasn’t hungry.”

That answer mattered.

Hours later, preliminary testing suggested we had both been exposed to a drug capable of causing profound sedation.

The doctor did not speculate beyond what the tests supported.

Neither did I.

Noah recovered faster.

He was thirteen.

Healthy.

Terrified.

When they finally let me see him, he grabbed my hand.

“Mom.”

“I’m here.”

“Was Dad trying to kill us?”

I wanted to say no.

Every maternal instinct wanted to protect him from that sentence.

But lying would only create another kind of damage.

“I don’t know exactly what he intended.”

Noah stared.

“But he knew?”

I swallowed.

“The police are figuring that out.”

That was the truth.

Enough for now.
