Chapter 9 - I SOLD THE HOUSE

I never moved back.

Not once.

The house was eventually sold through the legal and marital process.

I hired professionals to pack most of it.

But Noah wanted his telescope.

So we returned together.

Daylight.

With my sister Claire and two friends.

The kitchen looked exactly the same.

That was unsettling.

Blue plate cabinet.

Freezer drawer.

Narrow cupboard where the old corded phone had been hidden.

Noah stood in the doorway.

“That phone saved us.”

I looked at it.

Maybe.

But objects do not save people alone.

Choices do.

I picked it up.

Then placed it back.

“No.”

“What?”

“We used it.”

He thought about that.

Then nodded.

“We saved us.”

Closer.

With help.

Police.

Paramedics.

Doctors.

Investigators.

Therapists.

People do not survive alone, even when stories make it sound more dramatic that way.

We collected the telescope.

May you like

Nothing else mattered.
