Chapter 3 - THE FOOD BAG

The food sample mattered.

So did the plates.

So did the cookware.

So did Daniel’s devices.

Investigators secured what they were legally permitted to collect and preserved the kitchen as a scene.

The sealed bag I had hidden behind frozen peas was documented separately because I had removed it before police arrived.

My hands shook when Detective Rosa Martinez asked how I had thought to save it.

“I don’t know.”

That was honest.

“I just knew something was wrong.”

She nodded.

“You did well.”

I hated praise.

It made the whole thing sound like a test I had passed.

I had not wanted a test.

I had wanted dinner with my husband and son.

Still, preserving the food helped investigators compare what Noah and I had eaten with what remained elsewhere in the kitchen.

That became important later.
