Chapter 7 - THE EMERGENCY HEARING

The custody hearing was the first time I saw Marcus after the hospital.

He looked clean.

Rested.

Calm.

I hated him for looking normal.

I looked bruised.

That felt backward.

His attorney emphasized that Noah needed both parents.

My attorney agreed.

Then said:

“Safely.”

That word changed the room.

Medical photographs.

Baby-monitor recordings.

The prewritten custody notes.

Evelyn’s pediatrician voicemail.

Marcus’s digital folder.

None proved that I was perfect.

I wasn’t.

I was exhausted.

Angry.

Terrified.

Sometimes disorganized.

But parenting law did not require a mother to be flawless.

It required adults to be safe.

The temporary order kept Noah with me.

Marcus received supervised contact while investigations and assessments continued.

Evelyn received no independent access.

She gasped when the judge said it.

As though grandmotherhood were a deed.

It wasn’t.

Afterward, Marcus passed me in the hallway.

He whispered:

“You’re taking my son away.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

Then:

“I’m refusing to let you use him to control me.”

For once, Marcus had no answer ready.
