Chapter 8 - I FOUND THE TEXT THAT BROKE ME

Months later, my attorney showed me one more message recovered through discovery.

Marcus to Evelyn.

Sent two weeks before the assault.

Sometimes I think Sarah loves Noah more than she loves me.

Evelyn replied:

That’s because she knows the baby gives her power.

Marcus:

Then I need to take that power away.

I read it three times.

Then cried harder than I had in weeks.

Not because the message was the cruelest.

Because it explained everything.

Marcus had turned a newborn’s dependence into competition.

He saw my attention to Noah as betrayal.

Evelyn reinforced it.

A mother nursing her infant became manipulative.

A mother asking for privacy became controlling.

A mother refusing to hand over her crying baby became unstable.

Nothing I could have done would have satisfied a system built on the idea that obedience proved love.

That realization freed me from one question.

What should I have done differently?

May you like

Nothing could have made their need for control healthy.
