Chapter 18 - The Trojan ArchitectureTo hack an impenetrable digital fortress, you don't fight the software. You break the hardware.

We crossed the city under the cover of a freezing, blinding snowstorm. Julian and I rode in the back of an armored SUV, flanked by our Tier-One private security detail. The abandoned meatpacking plant in the West Loop looked like a decaying relic from the outside, but as we approached, Julian’s architectural eye caught the subtle upgrades: reinforced steel doors, newly installed industrial exhaust vents, and a dozen hidden thermal cameras.
"He has a private military contractor guarding the perimeter," Julian noted, loading a localized, encrypted EMP drive into the inner pocket of his tactical coat.
"We don't need to fight the guards," I said smoothly, stepping out into the snow. "We just need to cut off the head of the snake."
While our security team executed a flawless, silent sweep of the perimeter—neutralizing Dominic’s guards with suppressed tranquilizers—Julian and I breached the loading dock.
Inside, the facility was a masterpiece of illicit technology. Rows of glowing, humming quantum server racks filled the massive warehouse, submerged in cryogenic cooling tanks. This was the brain of Dominic’s operation. This was the machine holding my empire hostage.
"Elias," I spoke into my secure earpiece. "We are inside the server farm."
"I see the mainframe terminal, Sarah," Elias replied from the penthouse. "But it’s air-gapped. You have to physically insert the EMP drive into the primary console to sever his connection to The Apex."
Julian and I moved toward the central glass control room. But before we could reach the terminal, the heavy steel doors behind us slammed shut.
Dominic Vance stepped out from the shadows, flanked by four heavily armed mercenaries. He held a tablet in his hand, a smug, arrogant grin on his face.
"I knew you wouldn't just surrender, Sarah," Dominic sneered. "My sister told me you were stubborn. You walked right into my trap. The moment you destroy this server, my failsafe triggers, and The Apex plunges into darkness. You lose."
"I never lose, Dominic," I said softly, not taking a single step back.
"Shoot them," Dominic ordered his men.
But the mercenaries didn't move. They slowly lowered their weapons, stepping away from Dominic.
Dominic frowned, looking around in confusion. "I said shoot them!"
"They don't work for you anymore, Dominic," Julian rumbled, his voice echoing through the massive warehouse. "When you hire private contractors through the dark web, you should really check who owns the holding company that signs their paychecks."
I smiled, a radiant, devastatingly sharp expression. "My firm bought your security company three years ago. You brought my own guards to my execution."
Dominic staggered backward, the color draining from his face.

"Julian," I said smoothly, gesturing to the glowing quantum core. "If you would be so kind."
Julian stepped forward and slammed the EMP drive directly into the primary terminal.
