Chapter 3 - The Mistress’s Reality CheckWhile Grant’s professional and financial world was spontaneously combusting, the domestic bliss he had envisioned with Tessa was rapidly turning into a toxic wasteland.

Tessa had walked into my home on Friday night wearing a glittering green dress, expecting to step seamlessly into the role of the wealthy executive’s new wife. She imagined weekends at the country club, endless shopping sprees funded by Grant’s black card, and the luxurious, pampered life of a woman who had successfully stolen a prize.

Instead, she woke up on Monday morning in a massive, echoing house with a man whose life was actively collapsing.

Through the undeniable, rapid-fire gossip of our social circle, the details of their fallout made their way back to me. When Grant returned home on Monday afternoon—fired from his lucrative job and legally barred from accessing his own money—the illusion of his power vanished completely.

He didn't come home to lavish her with gifts; he came home screaming, hurling a glass vase at the wall, and frantically tearing through the home office searching for the documents I had already packed away in my third suitcase.

Tessa, realizing that the billionaire lifestyle she signed up for was a complete fabrication, began to panic. She tried to use the supplementary credit card Grant had given her to book a spa day to "escape the stress." The card was declined. She called him, furious, demanding to know why she was being humiliated at the salon counter. Grant, stripped of his ego and suffocating under the weight of his own ruin, finally snapped at her, screaming that she was a greedy parasite and that my disappearance was entirely her fault for pushing him to move her in.

The crowning moment of chaos arrived on Tuesday evening when Grant’s mother, Eleanor, showed up at the house. Eleanor had been present on Friday night, silently complicit in Grant's plan to humiliate me. But Eleanor only respected one thing: appearances.

Finding her golden-boy son unemployed, facing a massive IRS audit, and screaming at a twenty-four-year-old mistress in the middle of a trashed living room was too much for her fragile social sensibilities. Eleanor demanded to know where her grandchildren were. When Grant admitted he had a restraining order against him and no legal right to see them until the court hearing, Eleanor turned her vicious, judgmental wrath entirely on Tessa.

"You ruined my son!" Eleanor had shrieked, according to a neighbor who heard the shouting from the driveway. "You are a cheap, homewrecking gold digger, and you have destroyed this family!"

Tessa, realizing she was tethered to a sinking ship with no money and a violently angry mother-in-law, did what parasites always do when the host dies. She packed her glittering green dresses into her designer luggage and called an Uber. She left Grant standing in the foyer of a massive, empty house, entirely alone, completely broke, and facing the terrifying reality of what he had done.
