Jason’s mother called me unexpectedly.
Her name was Susan.
I nearly declined.
Then answered.
“Caleb?”
“Yes.”
“I owe you an apology.”
I waited.
“We believed you had offered the apartment.”
“I know.”
“We also believed your parents owned it.”
“Also know.”
She sounded humiliated.
“Megan gave us a very detailed story.”
“I’m learning.”
Susan paused.
“Jason told us about the debt.”
“That’s between them.”
“I agree.”
Good.
Then:
“I said some rude things in the hallway.”
I remembered.
Is this the hospitality your brother offers?
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Thank you.”
No excuses.
Nice.
Then she surprised me.
“We’re paying for our own hotel next time.”
I laughed.
“Excellent policy.”
