Chapter 7 - LIAM ASKED WHY AUNT MEGAN WAS MAD
My seven-year-old son Liam came home Sunday.
Jules had already heard enough to know something happened.
She did not interrogate me.
Good ex-wife behavior.
Liam walked into his room.
Then came back immediately.
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“Did Aunt Megan sleep in my bed?”
“No.”
“Good.”
I smiled.
“Why?”
“She moves my trains.”
There it was.
Children notice boundaries too.
Then:
“Mom says Aunt Megan is mad at you.”
I sighed.
“She is.”
“Why?”
“Because I told her she couldn’t use our apartment.”
Liam frowned.
“Why would she use it?”
“Because she wanted to.”
“That’s not a reason.”
Exactly.
I laughed.
“No.”
Then he asked:
“Is she bad?”
“No.”
Important.
“She made some bad choices.”
“Like what?”
“Adult stuff.”
He nodded.
Then:
“Can she come over?”
“Someday.”
“When?”
“When she asks.”
Liam looked confused.
“She doesn’t ask?”
I laughed again.
“Historically, not very well.”
