Chapter 10: The Sound of Innocence

Helping Claire onto the high examination table was a delicate operation. Every movement caused her to wince, her face tightening as the paper gown strained against her battered ribs. Elena, focused on adjusting the digital contrast of her monitor, didn't notice the subtle grunts of pain or the rigid way Claire held her upper body. To Elena, this was just another routine scan for a VIP patient who was perhaps a bit nervous about her upcoming surgery.

The cold, translucent gel hit Claire’s swollen abdomen, and she involuntarily shuddered. Elena picked up the heavy transducer probe and pressed it against the skin, angling it toward the lower quadrant of the womb.

The monitor flickered to life, displaying a grainy, high-contrast world of monochrome shadows and fluid. Then, a rhythmic, rapid sound filled the quiet room.

Thump-thump-thump-thump-thump.

It was fast, steady, and incredibly loud. It was the sound of a perfect, undamaged heart beating at one hundred and forty-five beats per minute inside a broken world. Hearing it, Claire’s face softened for the first time all morning. Her tears came again, but this time they were different—they were the tears of a mother realizing that despite the violence she had endured, her child was still safe, still fighting, still whole.

"Heartbeat looks beautiful," Elena murmured, her fingers typing rapidly on the keyboard to lock in the biometric markers. "One hundred and forty-five beats per minute. Excellent fluid volume. He’s a strong little boy, Mrs. Reed."

I stood by Claire’s head, my fingers gently smoothing her matted hair away from her forehead. But even as the beautiful sound filled the room, my ears picked up a different noise out in the corridor—the heavy, rhythmic click of expensive leather dress shoes advancing rapidly down the cherry-wood hallway.

The door to Examination Room 4 swung open, and Dr. Julian Reed stepped into the threshold.
