Chapter 9: Room 4: The Final Countdown

We entered Examination Room 4. The room was large, dim, and dominated by a state-of-the-art 4D ultrasound machine that looked more like a piece of military radar equipment than a medical tool. The clinical technician, a young woman named Elena, was already busy preparing the equipment. She wore an immaculate white scrub suit with the Reed Medical Holdings logo embroidered in gold thread over her heart. Her salary, her career, and her professional future were entirely dependent on Julian’s goodwill.

"Good morning, Mrs. Reed," Elena said, her voice carrying the polished, high-society warmth that Rosehaven demanded of its front-line staff. "Dr. Reed called down from the executive board meeting just five minutes ago. He requested that we finalize the exact C-section positioning parameters today and send the digital rendering straight to his private terminal for final approval."

Claire’s fingers tightened around my arm with such force that I could feel the individual bones of her hand shaking. The room felt freezing cold despite the climate control. The threat Julian had delivered—the explicit promise that she would never wake up from her surgical delivery if she crossed him—seemed to solidify in the sterile air, turning the gleaming medical machinery into instruments of terror.

"Of course," I said, stepping smoothly between Elena and my daughter, projecting the image of an overprotective, wealthy grandmother-to-be. "Let's perform the baseline diagnostic scan first, Elena. We want to hear the heartbeat before we get into the administrative logistics of the delivery room."

Elena smiled professionally, though a slight flicker of hesitation crossed her eyes. "Dr. Reed was quite specific about the order of the protocol, ma'am. He wanted the structural measurements finalized first—"

"And I am quite specific about my grandson's heartbeat," I interrupted, my voice dropping into a tone of quiet, aristocratic authority that brooked no argument. "The baseline scan, please."

Elena bowed her head slightly, intimidated by the icy confidence I projected. "Yes, of course. Please lie back, Mrs. Reed. Let's get you comfortable."
